Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association

Announcement

The Honorable Richard Dorr
1943-2013

Our community and profession sustained a great loss with the passing of U.S. District Judge Richard E. Dorr. Judge Dorr died Wednesday, April 24, in Houston where he was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Judge Dorr was actively involved in organizations and causes to improve and support the community and profession both before and after he was on the bench.  Every year he personally hosted new bar members in his office and courtroom, and gave them his "A-game talk," sharing tips and tactics to launch their careers on the right track. The SMBA was fortune to have Judge Dorr share insights at our December lunch where he was candid about his illness and encouraged us to remember what is important in life and to take care of ourselves, our health, and our loved ones.

Judge Dorr also involved the bar in the annual Naturalization Ceremonies he conducted so beautifully. He often asked the new citizens to reflect on what type of life they were hoping to have in this country and to ask themselves daily, "Am I moving in the right direction?"

Judge Dorr delivered the SMBA Law Day Address in 2010 and was the recipient of two Law Day honors, the 1995 Equal Access to Justice Award and the 2009 Excellence in the Judiciary Award.

Services for Judge Dorr will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 2:00 at Clara Thompson Hall.  All are welcome to attend the memorial as well as a portrait ceremony which will be held later this year. View Judge Dorr's obituary.
