NAR News- National Directors Urge NAR to Draft Member Code of Excellence

As part of a wide-ranging set of recommendations to raise the bar on REALTOR professionalism, the NAR Board of Directors at its Nov. 10 meeting in New Orleans approved the drafting of a proposed aspirational Code of Excellence to be brought to the board at a future meeting for approval. The goal is to raise the practice of real estate measurably through increased training in the competencies that consumers value. These competencies include the stewardship of property listing data, privacy and security of consumer information, advocacy of property rights, community involvement, and technology.

The provision was passed after extensive debate on the floor of the meeting. Related provisions were also passed. These include provisions that would do the following:

  • Change the frequency of NAR's Code of Ethics educational requirement from every four years to every two years, starting in 2016; add a biennial Code of Excellence education requirement; and mandate continual updating of the training.
  • Help its members strive to be proficient in data content and have efficient access to the broadest range of data available.
  • Develop an industry standard that would allow consumers to evaluate REALTORS fairly and accurately. READ MORE

New Jersey is working hard to help Samsung Electronics Co. find a major new office site in the state, Bergen County and state officials said following a report that the consumer electronics giant is looking for 1 million square feet of space in Manhattan.

Officials said Samsung, which has had its U.S. headquarters in Ridgefield Park since 1992, has been wooed for nearly a year. State representatives even traveled to the company's South Korean headquarters last year, extolling New Jersey's benefits to corporate executives. READ MORE

Local Ordinance: Englewood approves new zoning for downtown and industrial sector
The Englewood Council adopted sweeping new zoning changes Wednesday aimed at creating a livelier downtown, reinventing south Englewood's industrial sector.  The changes are intended to help achieve the goals outlined in the new
master plan. Under the new regulations, the area will be separated into two districts: a Research, Industry and Medical zone roughly bounded by Overpeck Place/William Street and the train tracks and extending south from Linden Avenue to the Englewood-Leonia border, and a smaller light-industrial zone surrounding it. CALL TO ACTION!
Urge Congress Extend Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Tax Relief

The income tax exemption on mortgage debt forgiven in a short sale or a workout for principal residences expired at the end of 2013.  Without immediate action by Congress, distressed homeowners will have to pay tax on "phantom income" from forgiven debt.  Many families have decided not to go through with short sales or seek workouts because of the uncertainty over the status of the waiver.  This is not only unfair but harms families, neighborhoods and communities.  Please urge your representative and senators in Congress to extend this tax relief now. Click to Answer The Call to Action

How-To Attract the Online Customer

First, you need to know what they're looking for online so you can target your messages for highest impact. Pantana pointed to Google Trends (trends.google.com) as a useful tool to identify popular search terms. With Google Trends, you can type in keywords to see how popular various search terms are; you can even drill down by popularity based on your geographic area. For example, for a keyword like "kitchen remodel," you can see if the search term is trending in your area and find related popular keyword searches. You can then use that information as inspiration for what to blog about or weave those keywords into your website or online marketing to gain you higher traction on the search engines.
