Neighborhood Networks
St. Francis Square Neighbors Learn About Living and Aging Well at Home

The Community Living Campaign Committee at St. Francis Square continues

learning with a presentation and discussion with Dr. Doris Bersing.

As Community Connector Marcia Peterzell reported in the Co-op's
Friday Flyer: "Dr. Bersing's presentation on planning and making choices before one of the varied kinds of Dementia, including Alzheimer's, was thought provoking and helpful. She emphasized that in order to have medical and financial things go our way, it is important to make our choices while we can. Osomeone else will make difficult choices for us.

"She reminded us to

  • create our legal documents and store them for accessibility,
  • make a list of our 'web of important relationships' for support from neighbors, family and friends, and
  • the value of growing old in community, 'like St Francis Square Cooperative.'
  • And the importance of overcoming 'denial/de Nile'."

Learn more about Dr. Bersing's work in understanding the components of living well and aging well at home at: http://www.livingwellah.com.

Cayuga Neighbors Host Brain Fitness Presentation
CLC's Cayuga Community Connectors network was busy learning this month too. They hosted a talk with Dr. Christian Thompson about brain fitness. Dr. Thompson specializes in healthy aging - including brain fitness, older adult exercise and falls prevention.  See "Keeping Your Brain Fit as You Age" on our healthyaging.org blog for tips and downloadable brain games.

To get ready for Dr. Chris' talk there later that week - and to help keep their shared space for Always Active exercise classes clean - Cayuga neighbors had a great time pitching in to clean the community room at Bethel Church.

For more about Cayuga neighborhood activities, visit the new Cayuga Community Connectors website or contact Patti Spaniak at patti@cayugaconnectors.org.

What Happens When Those on Disability Insurance Reach Social Security Age?

Supervisor Wiener has called for a hearing "to highlight the predicament of long-term HIV Survivors whose private disability insurance terminates at Social Security eligibility", scheduled at the Budget and Finance Committee meeting

Wednesday, April 1, 10:00 am at San Francisco City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Board Chambers

Many San Franciscans have been fortunate enough to survive with HIV but are now facing a new challenge: transitioning from private disability insurance to Social Security as they reach the age of 65. Because Social Security provides lower financial benefits than private disability policies, many HIV survivors are facing difficult financial circumstances that may compromise their ability to ensure basic needs like housing. Supervisor Scott Wiener asked the Budget and Legislative Analyst to prepare a report, and on April 1, he will be holding a hearing on the report and what the city can do to help. For more info, contact Vince Crisostomo, Program Manager, 50-Plus Network, San Francisco AIDS Foundation, at 415-217-9128 or email vcrisostomo@sfaf.org

Insight Center's Metrics Matter Convening
This special convening is intended to raise awareness and understanding of economic security metrics (or alternative measures of poverty) and build participants' understanding of how to use these metrics to support their work. The convening is geared toward staff from direct service and policy advocacy organizations who are new to or have limited familiarity with economic security metrics. The date is April 15, morning session in Oakland, afternoon in San Francisco.  More information and the link to register by April 1st here. Feel free to share with others.

The Insight Center is also interested in learning how your organization is using economic security metrics (e.g. the Self-Sufficiency Standard, Elder Index, or those that include savings and asset building) and how doing so has impacted your work.  Please take a few minutes to answer these three quick questions via email:
  1. Have you used an economic security metric to help your clients with financial and career planning?
  2. Have you used an economic security metric to bolster your argument for or against a certain policy proposal?
  3. Have you cited an economic security metric in a funding proposal to show the need for your services in your community?
Please email Jenny Chung at jchung@insightcced.org  to share what metric(s) you have used, how, and what difference it made in your work.
