Community Living Campaign: Whatever the issue, relationships are part of the solution
Celebrating Community Leaders
 Vera Haile Remembered
image of Vera Haile Senior Housing
Friends, family and colleagues of Vera Haile Dalenberg gathered at St. Mary's Conference Center to honor Vera's life and dedication. Vera's daughters Laura Dalenberg Schooner and Diane Dalenberg (pictured left) have created a wonderful website to collect pictures and stories at www.verahaile.com.

Representatives of Mercy Housing brought a rendering of senior housing to be named in Vera's honor.  Watch this space, or Vera's memorial website, for more details about the Vera Haile Senior Housing opening celebration in October.

A couple of haiku poems by Maria Guillen capture images of Vera.

Persuasive, polite
A champion for those in need,
Firm velvet handshake.

Working with her peers,

Sharing knowledge with young folk,

Her guidance revered.

TAPCare - A New Option for Affordable Homecare

TAPcare is an online marketplace for consumers looking to find trained, experienced caregivers.  The home care providers featured are all graduates of the IHSS Consortium's homecare provider training program, Training Academy of Personal Care Assistants (TAPCA), and are looking for private pay work.  The service is intended for consumers and their families who are able to hire and supervise their own caregivers independently.

Learn more about the IHSS Consortium's newest initiative at  https://tap-care.org or contact IHSS Consortium's Manager of On-line Services, Peter O'Connell at poconnell@tapca.org.

ART CART Presentation
Joan Jeffri recently visited San Francisco to make a presentation about ART CART at the Research Center for Arts and Culture. This program addresses challenges by providing aging artists with direct, hands-on support and guidance to manage and to preserve their life's work, and by providing students with an intergenerational, educational experience and mentorship in the documentation of artistic legacy.

CLC hosted sessions previously to learn about RCAC's earlier study,  Above Ground: Information on Artists III: Special Focus New York City Aging Artists, revealed that artists are in many respects a model for society, maintaining strong social networks and an astonishing resilience as they age.  If this is topic that interests you, contact marie@sfcommunityliving.org
Connections Forum Focuses on Grief and Loss with Patrick Arbor
Patrick Arbor helped us all think about how we cope and grow through grief and loss at a Forum hosted at Openhouse, as a follow-up session for graduates of the Connections for Healthy Aging (CHA) workshops there.

Patrick reminded us that connections to one another are what bind us to life, yet for isolated individuals and their often equally isolated caregivers, these connections tend to disappear.  The Institute on Aging hosts regular support groups and their Friendship Line is the nation's only 24-hour toll-free hotline for older and disabled adults.  More information available on the Institute on Aging website

StoryCorps Helps Us Tell Our Own Stories        Vera and Gay in front of Storycorps Booth
Recording  history, one story at a time.
Last month, we highlighted a Project coordinated by Alice Wong to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at StoryCorps for members of the disability community to record their stories.  And StoryCorps can also help us record the history of the whole community living movement.

Some years ago, Vera Haile was interviewed in the StoryCorp booth by Gay Kaplan, and that interview enriched the memorial as it allowed us to hear Vera once again talk about what's important to her in our own voice.

After a 40-minute recording session, each participant pair goes home with a broadcast quality CD of the conversation that just took place and, with their permission, a copy of the conversation also gets archived in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Learn more on how to participate here.  Download a copy of the flyer for more information or a more detailed fact sheet.  For more information on StoryCorps, visit storycorps.org/about/.  For any questions or comments, contact Alice Wong, Project Coordinator at alicat155@gmail.com.
