Community Living Campaign: Whatever the issue, relationships are part of the solution

Supervisors Add Funds, But Ignore Non-profit's
Plea for Cost of Doing Business Increasesnon-profit workers rally
While a number of service areas saw increased funding in the City's budget, the people who work at non-profits to provide the services did not.  The Mayor had included a 1.5% increase in his budget but the hope was that the Board of Supervisors would at least add another 1.5% to cover non-profits' increased health and operating costs. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of several Supervisors, no additional funding was added.  But the budget is not done, with the final version to be presented on July 15 and voted on July 22.

Call your Supervisor and urge them to cover increased health and operating costs by giving a cost of doing business increase, otherwise there is no choice but to cut services.

Thank you to the Coalition of Agencies Serving the Elderly (CASE) and the Human Service Network (HSN) for their hard work and for providing the first look at the list of Board of Supervisors Add-backs.

The eviction notices remain in place for the remaining 39 residents of San Francisco's historic University Mound Ladies Home. Why is the City allowing these wholesale evictions, removing frail elders from their home?   There outta to be a law against this!

Sharing Our Stories
Disability Visibility Project with StoryCorps   storycorps booth
Recording disability history, one story at a time.

To mark the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), StoryCorps in San Francisco  is reserving a number of sessions from July through December 2014 for members of the disability community to record their stories.

Schedule a time to share your stories about the disability experience. What was life like before and after the ADA? How did it impact your life? What do you see in the future for people with disabilities?

After a 40-minute recording session, each participant pair goes home with a broadcast quality CD of the conversation that just took place and, with their permission, a copy of the conversation also gets archived in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Learn more on how to participate here.  Download a copy of the flyer for more information or a more detailed fact sheet.  For more information on StoryCorps, visit storycorps.org/about/.  For any questions or comments, contact Alice Wong, Project Coordinator: [email protected].

Happy 50th to St. Francis Square Cooperative Housing!
old picture of coop construction

Created 50 years ago, St. Francis Square cooperative housing was a pioneering venture to provide fully integrated, working class housing in the heart of the Western Addition. Through a Partnership between the Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), pension funds were loaned in the early 1960s to create 300 units of fully integrated, working class housing in an area that had been leveled by redevelopment.  In 1964, St. Francis Square became an independent and democratic cooperative, truly run by its members and representing all races. And the Square remains, in the words of its motto: "Dedicated to the idea that all races, religions and beliefs can live together in harmony."

Some of the original families, now numbering three generations, still live in the Square.  Through the efforts of Marcia Peterzell, Linda Silver, Jimmye Bynum, and many others, a Community Living Campaign Committee was formed in 2009 to provide support to residents and their families as they age.

Want to learn more? Don't miss a great exhibit at the Main Library, 6th floor through August 23rd. Enjoy a collection of historical photographs, memorabilia and interviews celebrating the community and its residents.

Thanks for Charting the Course, Captain Bill Haskell
At the end of July, Bill Haskell retired from the Department of Aging and Adult Services.  Bill was the staff guru behind the Long Term Care Coordinating Council (LTCCC)  and the development of its many and diverse projects and workgroups.  Friends and colleagues of Captain Bill  applauded his leadership and celebrated Bill as our superhero. We look forward to see what he does as an encore. See our blog post for more detail (and more photos!)

Featured Blog of the Month - At Home with Growing Old(er)
watercolor of senior at window
"There's No Place Like Home" - Watercolor by Karen Sherr
This blog comes out of a monthly gathering on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 6:00 to 8:00, and explores and recognizes who we are and what we need as we age.  It is an interdisciplinary forum and network of thinkers, activities and professionals innovating solutions for the challenges of an aging society.  Some featured findings:
  • The Home and its context, rather than an institutional environment, is seen as a major contributor to healthy aging.
  • A Home's value is not determined by the nubmer of rooms but how safely and easily one can live independently in it.
  • One's own story can persist despite loss and decline in function.

To learn more about this group and their blog, visit their site at www.athomewithgrowingold.com.
