Community Living Campaign: Whatever the issue, relationships are part of the solution
Mayor Releases Two Year Funding Plan
On June 2, Mayor Ed Lee released his budget for fiscal years 2014-15 and 2015-16, with lots of good news --including on-going funding for SF Connected and additional funding for food programs - all made possible by a robust local economy.

As the plan moves to the Board of Supervisors, the focus will shift from what is included to what is left out -- like the Long Term Care Council's request for a $3 million addition to the Community Living Fund to provide a range of support to help individuals stay living in their own homes and neighborhoods as long as possible.

10 Things to Love (& 5 Things to Hate) About Technology

Join Marie Jobling, Executive Director of the Community Living Campaign, for a dialogue about how the Internet - and computers that fit in our pockets - can enrich our lives (and drive us crazy).

The session will highlight existing resources for free and low-cost internet access, as well as for basic training and one-to one-tutoring. It will also include a quick demo of Facebook, Skype and other internet and social media sites. And Marie will share how technology is helping those of us with vision, hearing loss, and other disabilities stay connected and engaged in our world.

When: SATURDAY, JUNE 28 -- 10:00 a. m. to 12 Noon
Where: Flood Building, 870 Market St., Room 1185
Handicap Accessible;  All Invited; Donations Accepted

Participants will get a chance to try out various tablets as well as other tools for access. There will be something for everyone, whether you love or hate this new world of online connections. AUDIENCE DISCUSSION WELCOME! For additional information, visit the OWL website at www.owlsf.org or contact Betty Traynor at btraynor@att.net (415-931-1126).

Time To Start Dancing

The Minnie & Lovie Ward Ol' Skool Line Dancers graced the stage with their presence at the Minnie & Lovie Ward Recreational Center to perform at the OMI (Oceanview, Merced Heights, Ingleside) Community Festival in May.

This group formed in 2013 with the Community Living Campaign, San Francisco Park and Recreation Department, and Minnie & Lovie Ward Recreation Center.  According to CLC Community Connector Deloris McGee, she and others in the OMI use this group as another way to fight isolation and depression, manage weight, socialize, and make new friends.

Wonderful dance instructor Inez Bradstreet makes sure the dancers put in their one and a half hour of movement. She says this is not just dancing, but also a form of exercise. The dancers enjoy themselves and there is a lot of laughter and community-building right in the OMI neighborhood each FRIDAY from 3:00PM. to 4:30PM. at Minnie & Lovie Ward Recreation Center on Capitol and Montana.  Jackie Battle, Director of Minnie & Lovie Ward Recreational Center is always there to greet and accommodate any request.  For more information, contact Deloris at 415-585-9859.

Cayuga Gets More Active...in Lots of Ways
The Cayuga Always Active exercise classes (meeting every MONDAY, WEDNESDAY and FRIDAY from 9:45 to 10:45AM) has now enrolled 31 seniors. The youngest member is 62 and the oldest is 89.

The Cayuga Community Connector, Glenda Hope, at the request of one of the exercise participants, is developing a telephone reassurance program in the neighborhood.

Connections for Healthy Aging Workshop Highlights How to Transition from Hospital to Home
Another successful workshop series concludes, in partnership with Openhouse as we reweave a safety net and community of support for ourselves and our communities.

One important topic is how to have the best transition from hospital to home, whether for a planned or emergency hospital stay.  Amber Carroll (pictured right) of the San Francisco Transitional Care Program, a Medicare demonstration project, explained how this important initiative is helping.

We will soon be scheduling more workshops in partnership with other local churches and organizations. If you are interested in scheduling a Connections workshop, contact Marcia Peterzell at (415) 359-1816 or marcia.peterzell@comcast.net

Lights, Camera, Action!

CLC has just started to work with BAVC - the Bay Area Video Coalition - on documenting and producing videos by our Community Connectors.

This new project, CLC VIP (videographers in production) - will focus on the interests of our new videographers and putting content online about issues facing our communities of seniors and people with disabilities.

The initial group just had their first workshop on production, including technique and equipment, and will shortly be having another one at the live studio where they will learn how to use the studio to edit and screen their pieces and broadcast them over San Francisco's Community Access Television station.  For more information about the CLC VIP group, contact Judy Auda at judyauda@yahoo.com.

University Mound - Keep It Around!

Eviction notices to 53 residents of San Francisco's historic University Mound Ladies Home in the Portola neighborhood have generated protests and pleas to save this supported housing for current and future San Franciscans.

University Mound Ladies Home, a licensed state residential care facility located at 350 University St., has served elders since 1884 and currently has 53 residents.  The University Mound board of trustees issued the eviction notices to residents, family members and other representatives, citing that the building was closing because costs outstripped revenue and all earlier endowments have been exhausted.  Supervisors David Campos and David Chiu (both of whom are running for State Assembly) have pledged to work to find funding.  For more information, contact the Housing Rights Committee at info@hrcsf.org
