The San Francisco Food Security Task Force is leading these efforts, guided by their 2013 Assessment of Food Security, which includes information on need by Supervisor district.  Learn from city agencies, community based organizations and residents about what we can do to improve food security.  CLC has developed food networks in the OMI, Parkmerced/University Park and Bayview communities to get fresh fruit, vegetables, staples and other healthy food items to seniors and persons who cannot access the regular food pantry sites because of age or disabilities.   We know many other neighborhoods would like to do this - Richmond, Bernal Heights, the Tenderloin, Chinatown, Visitacion Valley, Potrero Hill and beyond.  Help us increase the funding so that this neighbor-to-neighbor program can expand to other communities.

Isolation and Loneliness a Major Issue,  LGBT Task Force Findings Show
The LGBT Aging Policy Task Force has completed their work with a "must read" report for us all - view the report online or download a copy.  They delivered the report with hopes for its implementation, " We stand at the intersection of social justice and public policy for vulnerable LGBT seniors in San Francisco, and proudly recommend these essential public policies that we believe will enhance the living LGBT seniors in San Francisco."

Toward that goal, CLC in partnership with Openhouse, is hosting another Connections for Healthy Aging Workshop on four Fridays in May from 10:00 a.m.  to 1:00 p.m.  Join us May 9, 16, 23 and 30 as we reweave a safety net and community of support for ourselves and our communities.  More information and a flyer to download is available here. Sign-up by contacting Marcia Peterzell at (415) 359-1816 or marica.peterzell@comcast.net.
Social Connections - Going Boldly Online tricia webb in bed with table and equipment
Tricia Webb provided the inspiration for an article that appeared in Generations, the monthly magazine of the American Society on Aging. We hope it inspires more people to overcome their fears and just say "Yes" to these new tech tools to communicate.  If you are reading this online, you know how important connectedness can be. Please share with a friend or family member by downloading here.  It was donations to CLC that made this computer tablet available to Tricia.  If you can donate a tablet or help contribute, let us know.
Connectedness for Those with Hearing and Vision Loss
Shannon Simonson in front of equipment
We thank the United Way of the Bay Area and the generosity of Francis Goldsmith for making our work more inclusive of seniors with hearing and vision loss. Her bequest helped us bring our Connections for Health Aging workshop to the Hearing and Speech Center of Northern California last senior with shirt that says DEAF month.  Participants like David Mehler spoke of (and demonstrated) the importance of empowerment. Shannon Simonson shared information about the many resources available, including information, hearing tests, support groups, and twice a month access to free telephones and other assistive devices (pictured  in the case behind Shannon.) Call them to make an appointment.
CLC is working to put into place what we are learning.  We now bring assisted listening devices to all our workshops and we are providing American Sign Language for participants in the Swap Meets (see below).  LaNay Eastman is helping CLC staff and volunteers be more aware and helpful to those with vision and hearing loss.  As part of her work, she has assembled a great resource directory, available on our www.sfhealthaging.org blog.
Lifesaving Victory for ADH Centers - More Years Ahead SEnator Leno and Moli Steinert in party

Great news from Moli Steinert, persistant advocate for Adult Day Health Services (ADHS)(pictured right Senator Leno at last year's SteppingStone anniversary event). "I was thrilled to get a call from Mark Leno to tell me that he met with Toby Douglas in the afternoon, and DHCS (State Dept. of Health & Community Services) decided to restore the 10% MediCal rate for ADHC for San Francisco!! They conceded that there would be great harm if SteppingStone centers were to close."   A great article with more of the story here.  Please share the good news and thank Moli and Mark Leno for their help in seeing that justice prevails. This could not have been done without there hard work.

Renewed Focus on Lack of Economic Security - How Secure Are You?
The Insight Center for Community Economic Development recently issued a study about the challenges older adults face when adult children move home.  They also updated the numbers for how many seniors lack basic economic security county by county.   Try their on-line calculator to see how far above or below the line you are!
Anne Wilson of United Way speaking

Anne Wilson of the  United Way of the Bay Area and its partners joined UC Berkeley for a presentation on key factors in helping individuals and families climb out of poverty.   Download the Powerpoint and learn more about the RISE Together movement here.

The National Senior Citizen Law Center and its supporters have introduced the Supplimental Security Income Restoration Act of 2014 (S2089).  It would make long overdue adjustments to the SSI level, increasing overall eligibity and raising the asset limit from $2,000 to $10,000.  This in turn would increase access to Medi-Cal funded health and long term services and support, like IHSS and Adult Day Health Services.  Urge your representatives to support this bill.

John Schappi with seated friends from Nepal
Featured Blog of the Month -
Not sure how I stumbled upon this blog, but I have been following it for over a year and feel like I know its writer, 84 year old John Schappi.  While not a San Francisco blog, it is all about living in a city and learning how to age with grace.  You don't have to have Parkinson's disease to appreciate his research, reflections and advice. John started writing this blog after receiving his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2009 at age 80 as a "place to share experience, strength and hope."  I'm particularly enjoying the current series of posts related to his decision to shift from driving his car to public transportation.  John is pictured here with his friends and Nepalese housemates Nimesh and Bhawana.
