How Do the Affordable Care Act and Medi-Cal Expansion Impact Seniors and People with Disabilities?
We've posted handouts and other information from the October 11th Health Care Reform Forum on our blog on the ACA, Medicare and Medi-Cal page.

The forum  (pictured below) tackled the complex issues related to Medicaid (Medi-Cal) expansion and who will benefit, as well as how healthcare reform impacts seniors and people with disabilities on both Medicare and Medi-Cal. To view pictures, go to our recent blog post.  For more information contact: James Chionsini at Senior & Disability Action 415-546-1333, Ext. 304, james@sdaction.org

Know Your Rights and Claim Your Money
Social Security and the LGBT Community

Federal Social Security benefits are now available to married same-sex couples.  A packed house of over 200 people at the LGBT Center on October 30th heard how recent changes are opening the door for more equal access to benefits.  The forum was hosted by Openhouse, the Committee to Preserve Preserve Social Security and Medicare, and host of community organizations including the Community Living Campaign.  To learn more or to sign up for benefits, visit the Same-Sex Couples page on the Social Security Website.

Find Resources for Assistance with Hearing and Vision Disabilities

If you're facing vision or hearing loss, there are many new tools such as assistive technology and social media that can help. Funded by a grant from the Francis Goldsmith Fund through United Way of the Bay Area, Community Connector LaNay Eastman has compiled a Directory of Resources for Assistance With Vision and Hearing Disabilities. The directory includes resources to help people stay connected and engaged with their community as well as to health and educational and supportive services,

We are building community-based and online networks of support for isolated and at-risk seniors and individuals with disabilities.  The priority with the Francis Goldsmith Hearing and Vision Initiative is on assisting those with vision and hearing loss, which can lead to isolation and more rapid decline in health and well-being. Learn more here.

Pictured above, LaNay is working with Maria Cristina Salem to teach typing using various online programs that make it easier for individuals with vision loss use the computer.

CLC Connectors and Supporters Out and About
Sunday Streets in the Richmond District
CLC closed out the season of Sunday Streets in the Richmond district.  We got to chat with Joyce Jackson and she found a new friend.   By the way, Elephanti is a new cell phone application that lets you shop online for things you need in your own neighborhood.   I typed in rice pudding and found 3 restaurants within walking distance.   Pretty cool.   They also had a charming mascot.   Don't you think CLC needs a mascot?  Send any suggestions for our own Community Living mascot to marie@sfcommunityliving.org.

St. Francis Episcopal Church Builds Connections for Healthy Aging
CLC just completed a 4-part workshop with St. Francis Episcopal Church and are working with leaders to prepare a follow-up session to keep the momentum growing forward into November.  Great advance planning and the warmth and friendliness of participants made for a positive experience for all involved. From the evaluation,  "I loved every minute of them (the sessions). Thank you all so much!'

Upcoming connections for healthy aging workshops are planned in partnership with the Bayview community in November (wait list only), Openhouse in January, and the Northern California Hearing and Speech Center in March. If your would like more information about workshops or to partner for a future session in San Francisco, contact Marcia Peterzell at marcia.peterzell@comcast.net.
Die-In Brings Government Back to Life
On October 16 at the Federal Building, the community gathered to stage a "die-in" to urge an end to the federal government shut down and the continuing attacks on Medicare, Medi-Cal and other safety net programs. The federal government re-opened that evening (nice work folks!)

But the fight to preserve these other programs continue.  Keep informed through the CARA at www.californiaalliance.orgEnjoy more of the pictures on the CLC Facebook page.  And if you like what you see, "like " us.
Breast Cancer Luncheon Support Grows
The Community Living Campaign is happy to support efforts of "communities working to help themselves."   One way is with the annual OMI Senior Breast Cancer Luncheon, held on October 17th at the Lutheran Church of our Savior in the Oceanview-Merced Heights-Ingleside (OMI) neighborhood  Guest speak Pamela Ratliff, Sr. Community Partnership Manager for the Community Partnership Program of the Stanford Cancer Institute is pictured at right with Sandra Carr, who assembled the gift basket and made a blanket to be given away.  See our blog post here for more pictures and learn more about who helped out.
Bayview Neighbors Helping Neighbors Fight Hunger
For over 4 months, CLC has worked in partnership with St. Paul Tabernacle Baptist Church, the San Francisco Food Bank, and a group of committed volunteers who pack and deliver groceries to those who would otherwise not be able to access the Food Pantry program. The delivery happens every 2nd and 4th Friday, starting at 9:30 am.

CLC is seeking strong volunteers who can help bring food from the pallets in front of the church through the back of the church, traversing 2 sets of stairs along the way.   If you want to take your morning exercise and work some muscles with us, contact Bayview Community Connector Etta Jones at (415) 574-8763 or ettaj828@gmail.com.
