"Keep Us Connected" Campaign Growing
Community Living Campaign has launched a grassroots "Keep Us Connected" Campaign to continue and expand affordable internet access, training and support for seniors and people with disabilities.
Keep up with the campaign on the Keep Us Connected Facebook Page. Show your support and ask your friends to "like us" too. Our February 11th, a Social Media and
Advocacy Workshop, featured below, helped launch this page and the number of supporters has been growing steadily since then. More information about Social Media and Advocacy workshop, and up-coming Campaign activities, highlighted below. CLC will also provide updated campaign information, material, events and actions at www.sfhealthyaging.org if you are not a Facebook user (yet).

Social Media and Advocacy Workshops Launched
Our Monday Meet-Up at 360 Valencia Street this month focused on social media and advocacy.  A delicious Chinese New Year's lunch was followed by a training that also launched our Keep Us Connected Facebook page.   Material from that workshop and other Campaign material is available for download at www.sfhealthyaging.org.   We are now ready to take our workshop on the road, including a presentation at the CARA Senior Leadership Academy this week.   To arrange a short presentation or larger workshop, contact us at CLC (415) 821-1003 ex. 1.

Laguna Honda Computer Club and Timebanking a Great Match
The Computer Club at Laguna Honda was started with the hope that club members would learn new skills and then would assist others.LHH residents who are interested in this idea receive an refurbished laptop and commit to 24 hours of volunteer time to help others to "pay back". Todd Stone, a novice computer user in the beginning, took to this idea and was one of the first to "graduate". Todd diligently tracked his volunteer time, and while he has more than completed his 24 hours, he is still going strong helping others. Todd is looking to move from Laguna Honda in a few months, but we know he will stay connected with his Computer Club friends.

Learn more about the computer club from another club member, Paul Henderickson, on his Laguna Honda Computer Club blog. Another way this program fits the model of mutual assistance is that CLC buys these high quality recycled computers from ReliaTech, a social enterprise of the Stride Center. The Stride Center trains and employs low income individuals while helping recycle and reuse computer equipment and putting it in the hands of low income individuals. If you are interested in helping us purchase a recycled computer to make available to a LHH resident in the computer club, email info@sfcommunityliving.org or simply DONATE HERE.

A Place At the Table - the Politics of Food and Hunger
CLC's Food Delivery Networks in the OMI and Parkmerced/University Park area bring us face to face each week with seniors who need food assistance but who are unable to go to neighborhood food pantries because of age or disability.  We now deliver fresh fruits, vegetables and staples to 89 seniors and people with disablities, in partnership with the Temple United Methodist Church and the San Francisco Food Bank.   But while providing this practical assistance, we wanted to learn more about how to change a system that leaves so many people in this country hungry.
March 1 marks the release of the film A Place At the Table - One Nation, Underfed.  50,000,000 people in the U.S. don't know where their next meal is coming from, despite our having the means to provide nutritious, affordable food for all.   This movie explores how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation and that it could be solved once and for all if we decide if making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all.  Opens March 1 at Embarcadero Center Cinema 5 or you can download and watch for free.  For more information, go to the  Place At The Table website.

Disability Advocate Starts A New Chapter

Over the years, Ken Stein has been a clear and consistant voice for disability rights and inclusion - being a movement leader on both sides of the Bay.   As staff to the San Francisco Mayor's Office on Disability and member of the Long Term Coordinating Council, Ken was a constientious and committed representative who did his homework and came prepared to ask good questions and offer positive ideas for resolving issues and seeking change.
Many know that Ken was also an early leader in the Bay Area's Independent Living Movement.  His  participation in the famous 28-day "504 Sit-In" at San Francisco's Federal Building in 1977 was a catalyst in passing critical disability related legislation.
Ken's retirement, like his life, was driven by his values and principles.  While we will miss this most dedicated advocate at the meetings, we will continue to hear his words - "providing equal access and accommodations is not just a nice thing to do - it's the law."   Thanks, Ken!

Breast Cancer Support Group - Healthy Eating Is In Fashion

On February 21, 2013, 20 seniors adorned their aprons to attend the Food Smart Nutrition Workshop at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior Senior Center. My Tu Duong is the Program Coordinator/Dietician for this six week session. She will be showing the group how to add easy healthy meal to their daily menus.

The breast cancer survivors have been practicing healthy eating for the last three years as part of the breast cancer support group's plan to address the health of the whole body. We look forward to adding more healthy meal choices by learning new cooking techniques. The Community Living Campaign is a partner with the Lutheran Church of Our Savior Seniors and Leah's Pantry.  Deloris McGee, Community Connector OMI, Community Living Campaign
