Take Care of Your Heart - and The Hearts of Those You Love |
February is American Heart Month. Do you know that heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans? We want to help you keep your heart healthy. Taking good care of your heart means controlling your risk factors for heart disease-such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and physical inactivity, as well as maintaining a healthy weight. Having just one risk factor can double your risk of developing heart disease, and your risk significantly increases with each added risk factor. www.hearttruth.gov
Levels of hormones, lipids, and other substances can be checked to help determine your risk of disease and monitor your response to therapy. For example, various types of infection or disease can lead to an elevated level of C-reactive protein (CRP), which indicates that there is inflammation somewhere in your body. Inflammation can damage the inner lining of the arteries and increase the risk of developing coronary artery disease, which may eventually lead to a heart attack. A high-sensitivity CRP test (hs-CRP) can be done to find out if you have an increased chance of having a sudden heart problem, such as a heart attack.
