Bishop Dyck asks how do we respond to Trayvon Martin's death?

In the days following the verdict of the George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin case in Florida, President Barack Obama said two things of note. The first statement was that the death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy, "not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America." I wholeheartedly agree with the President's assessment but I wonder whether all of America feels the impact of that reality.

Churches help get children back to school

Project Backpack, currently in its fourth year, is a community-based initiative led by Elgin Community College to benefit students in need. More than 2,200 students were helped in 2012!

Volunteers are needed in two ways:

-Helping to pack the backpacks with school supplies is a great way to say, "We are Methodists and we care!"  On Thursday Aug. 8 and Friday, August 9 - tons of community volunteers gather to prepare the backpacks. To volunteer -please click on this link - and follow the instructions on the Project Backpack website. First UMC Elgin is also collecting backpacks and supplies for this event.
