Noted author to speak at collegiate ministers' event

United Methodist collegiate ministers will join with colleagues from at least five mainline denominations at a gathering in Chicago this summer to explore how they can work together in the increasingly diverse and pluralistic atmosphere of the college campus.

The event, Shared Space, will begin with a lecture and time of interaction with Diana Butler Bass, author of the best-selling "Christianity After Religion."  Bass will be our Bible Study Leaders at the 2014 Annual Conference. Bishop Dyck is encouraging all church's to join in a "one book" study of Bass' A People's History of Christianity.

The collegiate minsters' event will be held June 26-29 at Loyola University. Click here to register.

Illinois residents who had losses or damages from the severe storms and flooding between April 16 and May 5 should register with FEMA, even if they think their damages and losses won't be covered. Continue to keep Marseilles, IL in your prayers.

Annual Conference Highlights




The 174th session of the Northern Illinois Annual Conf
erence concluded on Saturday, June 8 with the Service of Commissioning and Ordination. Bishop Robert

T. Hoshibata from the Desert Southwest Annual Conference delivered the message. Watch it here. 7 Elders and 2 Deacons were ordained. 10 candidates were commissioned for the work of an Elder and 1 candidate for the work of Deacon and there was one Provisional Recognition.

Other Highlights:


  • Bill Mefford was our Bible Study leader looking at the books of Esther and Acts. He challenged every church to engage in Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) and to open our eyes to our Immigrant neighbors. See Legislation: 700.11 
  • Arnold Rivera delivered the Laity Address 
  • Rev. Cynthia Wilson lifted us up with music
  • Volunteers packed more than 5,000 pounds of food at the Northern Illinois Food Bank to feed our hungry neighbors
  • More than a 1000 health care kits packed for Church World Service (our churches went above and beyond with donations enough to make a total 3,000 kits!!!) Read the full story...
  • 21 retirees honored for their years of service and ministry
  • Rev. Larry Hilkemann delivered the message at the Memorial Service as we remembered those saints who have gone before us.
  • The NIC began Act of Repentance to Native American and Indigenous people.
  • Celebrated 100 years of Filipino-Methodists in the U.S. with Bishop Rodolfo A. Juan from the Manila Episcopal Area.

  • 24 Hispanic/Latino Lay Missioners recognized.

Congrats to Chicago Northwestern District which took home the coveted Bishop's Appeal Traveling Trophy in a close race. Thank you to everyone's efforts ...the offerings from all 6 districts totaled more than $72,000.

The United Methodist Foundation gave another $3,000 increasing the grand total to $75,000.  Thanks to every church for giving abundantly!

United Voices for Children Launches Child Advocacy Survey

United Voices for Children invites all clergy and laity throughout the Northern Illinois Conference to participate during June in a brief survey on child advocacy in the NIC.

United Voices for Children Awards

UVC awarded four people for their excellence in ministry with children at their Annual Conference breakfast. Rev. Donald Baker from First UMC of Evanston and Dorothy Paige-Turner from Christ the Carpenter UMC received the Bishop Jesse R. DeWitt Child Advocacy Award.


Kandy DeWitt of Friendship UMC in Bolingbrook and Julie Sgarlata of Sycamore UMC received the Katherine B. Greene Child Worker Award.

  •  Chicago BMCR -Rev. Margaret Ann Williams "Joy of Serving" Award: Dr. Irma Clark from Hartzell Memorial UMC in Chicago was the lay recipient and Rev. Jon McCoy of St. Mark UMC.

 

  • Peace with Justice Award in memory and honor of Rev. Todd M. Singley by the NIC Board of Church and Society was given to Laura Dean Friedrich of Parish of the Holy Covenant UMC in Chicago.

 

 

  • ecumenical The Bishop's 2013 Ecumenical and Interreligious Award was given to Juancho C. Campanano of Aurora InterF.A.I.T.H.
  • The Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry awarded 14 students with $500 dollar scholarships. Thanks to the many churches which increased their giving with the Student Day offering, the committee was able to give more scholarships this year.
