On May 18 at the South Shore International College Preparatory School, located at 1955 E. 75th St.,Chicago, I am calling United Methodists to gather to work for the peace of Chicago from 9am until noon (but come early...doors open at 8am).
This is our opportunity as United Methodists to work toward the peace of Chicago in the areas of Community Safety, Restorative Justice, Food Security and Education. These are four areas that we as United Methodists can have a direct impact on our communities through our ministries and outreach. We will learn from each other, imagine together what we can do in our communities, and encourage each other in our outreach and impact.
I expect that each church in Chicago will have clergy and laity in attendance.
But we also need people from Chicagoland and beyond to come in support as we begin an urban strategy for United Methodists in the city. The welfare of the city is also the welfare of Chicagoland and beyond!
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to be in attendance along with 8th Ward Alderman Michelle Harris and others. This is our opportunity as United Methodists to demonstrate that since we have churches and people in all the neighborhoods of the city, we can make a difference in bringing peace to our city through outreach into our own communities.
This is a critical gathering to make a difference in Chicago as United Methodists...and I need YOU in attendance.
