News from Mary...

Happy New Year!

And a wonderful year it promises to be!  I am still in awe of the generosity of our community and its concern for the elders among us.  We are still receiving calls and notes from our very grateful participants who were so blessed during the Christmas season.  I don't know that there is any better way for me to say thank you for taking such good care of our participants than by sharing their words.

  • Mr. Joe called to say that he could not remember a Christmas when he'd had more gifts than those he received through MMOW this year.
  • Miss Wanda wrote "I don't know when I have felt so 'special'."
  • Miss LaVerne echoed, "Thank you so much for all you and individuals gave me for Christmas.  Everything is so essential to my life."
  • From Miss Maedell:  "There is so much I want to say that thanks just doesn't seem enough.  But I guess that's the word we always use.  Thanks for my Christmas basket.  May you continue doing what you're doing.  May the New Year be a Blessed one for all of you."
Hugs!

Mary

News from Sadie's

Sadie's kicked off the Holiday Season as a vendor at Taste of Northeast at Hurst Conference Center on November 14th. This was our first year to participate and it was wildly successful.

Hundreds of attendees came to sample tasty food, shop the gift market and enjoy the fabulous music. This event occurs each year and funds the Arts Council programs such as the Summer Arts Camps which had 377 children participating last year.

Sadie's proceeds from this event far exceeded our expectations and to top that off, our booth was voted BEST DECORATED among ALL the food and gift market vendors! We were absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition. Our staff and volunteers work hard to pull together these out of store events and we couldn't have been more pleased.

The "Ladies' of Sadie's" wish all of you

a great year in 2014!

From Behind the Wheel

I want to thank Regina Meyer for serving as our driver for several years. Regina is working full time and is helping care for her mother in her spare time so will be stepping down from driving after December. We really appreciate all that you have done for Meals on Wheels Regina! Taking her place is Kurt Wodrich. Thanks goes out to Kurt for joining our driving team and to Debbie Minea for training him this past week!!

I hope you all had a most Blessed Christmas this year and that you were able to share this time with family and friends!!

Thank you SO much for all that you do!! Have a happy 2014 as well!

Volunteer Opportunities

Never a day goes by that someone doesn't call the MMOW office asking if they can volunteer with us. My answer is always a resounding...YES. The holidays aren't the only time that we can use a spare pair of hands. Every month I can use volunteers to help sort and organize the shelves and load up the bags of meals for the participants. This is a great homeschool project too since the younger kids would be able to learn some great life lessons as they help Mom or Dad. Please give me a call if you have a bit of time to spare at 817-491-8534.

Wise County Drivers Needed

We still need to add drivers to our Wise County route, too. I have a driver that can do 2 Thursdays a month, so if you or someone you know, can take a Thursday I would sure appreciate it. Maybe you can ask at Tater Junction to see if anyone there might like to volunteer with us.

Community Chatter

Just last week I was asked to write a short article for Rep. Tan Parker. He wanted to make certain that the constituents in his area include our agency as a year round place to volunteer their time and talents.

Rep. Stephanie Klick, in the NE Tarrant area, feels the same and has asked me to come and talk to some of her fellow state representatives about MMOW. It's so nice to know that our leaders want to lead in spreading the word about us!!

Home Delivery

Remember I told you last month how big the Evergreen route was getting???? Well it is still growing and growing and GROWING!! We had pretty much reached "NO MORE" until one of the residents and I had a chat. Evergreen ambassador Ms. Mary has decided to volunteer to organize some of the residents to be volunteer delivery folks. Deana and I will be meeting with her and her team extraordinaire in the next week or so to get the ball rolling.

Animals can be the best companions as many of us know. Losing one is devastating for any of us. I know this myself. But, when the rest of your 2 footed family members are gone, the comfort and companionship from a 4 legged buddy can fill a gap and bring years of joy. I want to give a shout out to our very own Ms. Cheri, one of our NRH drivers, for not giving up hope in finding a replacement cat for Mr. Cort.

His wife of 68 years passed away last week and as I delivered his meal to him today I met his new buddy Roscoe. I am sure that he is helping him to cope with the loss of Ms. Patty, his beloved wife.

I can't possibly tell you how very grateful we are for your commitment to MMOW. Your time, treasures, and talents are the glue that hold our programs together. For yesterday, today and tomorrow...THANK YOU!! And now...Let's keep those tires rolling.

Hugs,

Nansii
