Hazardous waste bill makes strong showing in Capital
For the first time in its history, CRPE is the lead sponsor of legislation. AB 1329 aims to address the racial and economic disparities in hazardous waste siting in California. On April 20th, the bill passed out of the policy committee with support from all the democrats. The committee chair, Assemblymember Luis Alejo (Salinas), even signed on as a co-author. On May 24th, the bill cleared the very difficult appropriations committee. This week the bill will be voted on by the full Assembly. If it passes, AB 1329 will move to the Senate! Thank you to all the individuals who have supported our efforts and the more than 50 organizations that have signed on as official supporters. See updates and learn more about AB 1329 here
June 27th Root Beer Party!
Our late founder Luke Cole was known for his love of root beer and his summer root beer parties. In honor of this tradition we raise a frosty mug to the first Luke Cole Memorial Fellow, Madeline Stano. Please join CRPE, Madeline and Nancy Shelby at our San Francisco office on Thursday June 27th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for refreshments and lite fare. RSVP with Lauren Richter.
CRPE extends environmental justice expertise to Birmingham, Alabama

The proposed rail line is part of a larger pattern in Alabama, where polluting projects target vulnerable communities. According to director of Auburn University's Urban Studio Cheryl Morgans, "[Undesirable projects] tend to be in areas where there's the least sense that people have a way to stop these things."  But a coalition of dedicated activists are hoping to demonstrate the power of organizing; they have been working overtime speaking with local representatives, crafting legal arguments and testifying at public meetings. This month we welcomed Bianca Quintero to the CRPE family! The Delano native and University of California, Davis graduate is our newest community organizer.
Community Organizer Valerie Gorospe and her daughter Emily were featured in a NPR story about Valley Fever. At six Emily was diagnosed with VF, which is reaching epidemic levels in California. (Photo by Felix Adamo / The Californian.)
Legal Director Brent Newell and Luke Cole Fellow Madeline Stano traveled to the Native Village of Kivalina, Alaska to meet with clients May 14th. Learn more about our work in Kivalina on our website.
