Native Village of Kivalina to Appeal in Landmark Climate Change Case
|
On September 21st, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied Kivalina's appeal of their lawsuit against twenty-four of the largest oil and energy companies in the United States. Kivalina filed a public nuisance action, claiming that the companies have contributed significantly to and conspired to mislead the public about global warming. In Kivalina, global warming has caused sea ice to form later and melt earlier, exposing the island to extensive erosion and flooding. They are seeking monetary damages for relocation of the Village. Following the decision, CRPE legal director Brent Newell traveled to Kivalina to meet with Kivalina's leaders, who decided to move forward with another appeal. The appeal was drafted by Kivalina's legal team, led by Matt Pawa. If this appeal is denied, Kivalina plans to file a Petition with the U.S. Supreme Court. Read More

Residents Protest Dangerous Waste Facility
|
 | | Faustina Ramirez speaks at the protest. She frequents the facility to keep up a memorial for her sons |
This October marked one year since brothers Armando and Heladio Ramirez died from inhaling hydrogen sulfide, a byproduct of improper composting operations, while on the job at a waste facility near Arvin, CA. Kern County revoked the facility's permit shortly after, but it remains in operation. Fueled by recent findings from the Arvin Bucket Brigade that hydrogen sulfide is still present at unhealthy levels outside of the facility and desire to see it shut down for good, residents gathered in protest October 14th.
