Piragis Northwoods Company
Boundary Waters News March 6, 2014
Greetings!

Ely is still white, though we may have finally broken free from the deep freeze temperatures way down in the 20s and 30s below zero.  To walk to work at 12 degrees above, now seems balmy.

Or new catalogs will arrive in mailboxes across the country this coming week.  We have over 110 new items in our 2014 Spring Catalog.  Everything from new canoes, to new knives, axes, fantastic new book titles and new Piragis Clothing for the Boundary Waters.

Our Outfitting crew and Retail staff are traveling to Canoecopia as you read this to talk canoe tripping, book trips and sell our world-famous Piragis BWCA pants, zip-off pants, shirts and windwhirts.  If you're in Madison, Wisconsin this weekend, be sure to stop by and say hello to Drew, Adam, Delana, Laurel and Vidmar!

We know that Spring is on the way (at least according to the calendar) and in celebration we're offering you a chance to get a jump on it with 13.5 percent off now through Monday.  See below for details.

Sincerely,
Tim Stouffer
Piragis Northwoods Company

Springing

First sounds of moving water
echo through the North
with all the resonance of
butterfly wings.

Silent drips cascading
down the growing decent
of icicles formed in the lengthening
morning hours.

Dropping first a few centimeters
only.  On the soft snare drum skin
of aged snow.  Then deeper
and wider grows the pool;
until the rhythm rises
unmistakable.

Drip.
Drip, Drip, Drip,
DriDrip.

Thawing, the dreams of tomorrow
claw their way down
to last year's grass one
flake at a time.

Outfitting Notes from the Road
The van is rolling away the miles from Ely to Madison.  We're on the road.  This is one of the few sports shows that we do.  It is also one of our favorite because we get to talk with so many folks from the midwest who come to see us in Ely each year.  We've been talking trips since the permit season opened (and before) and we're happy to take a little trip of our own.

If you need to do some trip planning this weekend and you're not attending the show, just call our 1-800-223-6565 number and the staff at Piragis will get us a message or help you themselves.  We've got our cell phones and can give you a call if need be.  Hey, we're here to serve you in the best ways that we can and meet all of your trip planning needs!  Our new canoes are on the racks and waiting to be rented and paddled for the first time in 2014.  Call today and get your name on one or two :)

Stop by our booth at Canoecopia in Madison this weekend and talk with Drew or Adam at 800-223-6565 to start planning your adventure!!

To get a different perspective on sulfide ore mining see this resource:

Anyone can comment and the agencies with respond.  Be as specific as possible about your concerns as it relates to the SDEIS document.  Do simply say you support mining or oppose copper mining.  The comment should be about the SDEIS document and how can be improved in some specific way.

Thanks for taking the time this week to make your thoughts known to regulators.

BLOG 64.Water Containers For The Long Haul
by Cliff Jacobson

I never thought much about long-haul water containers until I started canoeing U.S. rivers.  On my Canadian trips, a liter poly bottle and a folding bucket were enough.  Except on rivers like the Bloodvein (Manitoba) where Giardia is a concern, I never carried a filter or purifier.  Instead, I was careful get my drinking water from clear water sources where contamination was unlikely.

My attitude changed when friends and I began to canoe American rivers.  Here, the choice was to carry our water or purify it.  On desert rivers like the Green, Little Missouri and Rio Grande, we settled the sediment with alum (see Blog #9/Western Water or the 25th Anniversary Ed. of my book, "Camping's Top Secrets) then purified the effluent.  This procedure worked marvelously.

Trip Advisor  2013 Certificate of Excellence
We are very happy to report that we received a Certificate of Excellence from tripadvisor.com in 2013.  Here is what the latest reviewer had to say:

"Best Bonding Trip EVER"

I took my 13 year old daughter on a 7-day guided trip with Steve and Cliff as an intro to the Boundary Waters for her. I wanted to share my experiences there when I was a teenager. I was beyond happy to find that she LOVED every aspect of the trip; even portaging which is hard work when all the packs weighed at least half as much as my 13-year old! I was proud of how hard she worked and overjoyed that she displayed a true passion for the great outdoors. She also caught nine fish during our journey which kept the whole group well fed during the week. Kudos to Piragis for such great outfitting and stellar guides. I could not dream of a better experience for both of us!
