Piragis Northwoods Boundary Waters News
June 8, 2013
|
Greetings!
Hello from the End of the Road.
Plenty of moisture, cool nights, warm water for swimming, fish on the bite -- it all adds up to a fantastic Summer to be in the Boundary Waters. You couldn't ask for better times in the woods.
Our intrepid Guide Steve Johnson is pictured below with the delicious bounty of blueberries. Growing wild in the wilderness for free, if you know where to look. This summer it isn't hard. Near rocky patches in the sun is a good place to start. Instant compliments to flapjacks, muffins or coffee cake mix. Great on their own for an instant snack right off the plant.
Plenty of berries in the woods of all kinds has meant a summer around Ely and the Boundary Waters with virtually no black bear sightings.
From all reports, the season for these beauties is about to wrap itself up, so if you've got a hankering, you better get here within the next week. Besides, school will be starting soon and IF you haven't got the family together for a vacation come visit us. It will be lighter on the pocket than Disney World and the rides are more fun :)
We'd like to get your trip pictures and journal accounts of your trips! Email them to our webmaster and we'll share your experiences with others in our newsletter and on Facebook. Thanks for all you who have shared so far.
Blueberry Cache
Unexpected snack in the sun, free of charge and easily picked; dreaming of flapjacks with bacon. Drop 'em in hat -- no one to contradict.
Sweeter with syrup, My dog noses purple hand as muscles stiff from paddling, crouch, loosen up. Pick, crawl, pick while canoe drifts: unmanned.
Rolling over to lay on the rocks, time to eat a few and share. Wonder at what adventure unlocks; when you find yourself in the middle of: nowhere.
Terrier's white forelocks stained with berries, Back home my Inbox filling with endless pleas. Think I'll take a nap, right here. Call it a wrap. Disappear.

Why Take a Guide on your next trip? Pictures are worth 1000s of words!
|
Over the years people ask, "Why do I need a guide?" After all, we all know how to camp. Tents come with instructions, maps are cheap, adventure is in the doing, right!? Absolutely. A guide is certainly not a requirement. HOWEVER, a guide can sure enhance the experience and when people trip with a guide like Steve Johnson, they usually come back saying, "Why didn't I do this sooner?!" Life in the wilderness can't be beat. We're here to make sure it is the best experience you could possibly have! Hello! I thought I would send along a couple pix from our trip. Had a fantastic time!

"We had great service with you guys when we were up earlier in the month. We would recommend you to anyone and hope to use you again in a couple of years. We based camped and canoed on Disappointment Lake."
Sam, Jody & Robert Cronk Marysville, OH"We had a great trip and you guys were a big part of that. You had everything ready and got us loaded and unloaded quickly and the equipment worked great and was mercifully light. I will recommend you to anyone and will certainly use you again in the future." Thanks, Al "Drew & Steve,
The Seliga arrived safely at our house on Monday morning. It is wonderful, and we feel very fortunate to be its new owners.
Thank you for the roles that both of you played in connecting us to the boat, helping with the purchase, and giving it a little TLC before making the transfer.
Working with you over the years has been great, and I look forward to making more connections in the future. We'll be sure to drop in the next time we're in Ely.
Wind at your backs." Alan

Somehow rivers speak to us... don't they?
More than placid lakes that lie still and demur asking only to be respected, rivers demand your attention. Spring whirlpools turn to summer's lazy meanders and the surface for transporting leaf boats to the sea in fall. Lakes seem safe in winter for us to ski or fish or camp, but rivers have the unpredictable personality that tempts us to take a chance.

Sustainable Ely, Envisioning a mining-free future for the Boundary Waters By Alissa Johnson -- WILDERNESS NEWS FROM THE QUETICO SUPERIOR FOUNDATION On the first day of June, thirty canoes and some sixty paddlers made their way down the Kawishiwi River. The paddlers wore down jackets and raincoats under their life jackets, and they paddled into a cold and rainy headwind. They took to the river in spite of the weather because they paddled for a purpose: to draw attention to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), which together with the South Kawishiwi River, has been named one of the most endangered watersheds of 2013 by the nonprofit American Rivers, and to launch a new initiative called Sustainable Ely. Both American Rivers and the people behind Sustainable Ely are concerned with one thing: mining proposed on the edge of the Boundary Waters. Sustainable Ely is an environmental action center that has opened up shop on Sheridan Street, the main drag in Ely, Minnesota. It's the brainchild of Steve Piragis, owner of Piragis Northwoods Company, and run by Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness. Their goal is to attract summer tourists. While there's an inviting sign in the front yard and a placard that reads "open" in the window, tourists won't find anything for sale inside. Instead, they'll find information on mining and computers at the ready so they can urge Congress and the President to protect the wilderness from mining altogether. Read the Rest Here |
