Piragis Northwoods Boundary Waters News

April 18, 2013

Greetings!

Greetings from the Northwoods.  Snow is falling all day today.  April continues to wear the cold temperatures of Winter and appears to be holding on tight to that blanket.

Undaunted, we are forging ahead and preparing for Spring trips on the horizon.  We all know it can't last much longer and Adam and Drew are busy each day, routing clients and getting permits and canoe rentals lined up.  We have been booking many new full outfitting canoe trips, guided trips and standard canoe rentals.  We're proud to offer three options for rental canoes that include Wenonah Canoes, Souris River Canoes and new Bell Composite Canoes, all in lightweight kevlar that weigh about 42 lbs.

Call us today at 1-800-223-6565 to talk trips and reserve your permits, canoes, gear, full-out, flights to Quetico, guides and to help route your trip.

Here's a little poem in light of our recent lack of sunshine :)

They call it Spring

April snow showers each new day bring
May have to wonder at the thing...
that Winter has become.
To hold the warmth and green at ransom.

Ice hard and thick enough to walk on.
The dreams of open water done;
locked tight beneath winters hard sheath.
Fish and Summer swim underneath.

The sun it hides, so unlike Fall
when over horizon painted scrawl.
One day we'll wake to warm rain showers
rotted ice and bright May flowers.

BWCA: A Place Like No Other
Above all else, Canoe Country is THE place in North America for canoeing and camping. One look at a map of the region shows you why. Within the boundaries of Quetico Provincial Park (on the Canadian side of the border) and the BWCA Wilderness (U.S.) are nearly 2,000 lakes that are linked by rivers, creeks, and portages to form hundreds of miles of wilderness routes - routes that are available only to paddlers. Created by glaciers that last scoured the region 10,000 years ago, it is a landscape unlike any other, anywhere in the world.

Although you can take day trips into the wilderness, the best way to experience the Boundary Waters is by camping overnight. The BWCA has nearly 2,000 designated campsites, with fire grates and box latrines. In Quetico Park, there are no improvements on the campsites. You may camp anywhere suitable. On both sides of the border, you'll camp at individual, separate sites, not shared with anyone else. Some lakes have several campsites, others have only one.

We are here to help you plan your trip every step of the way.  From permitting and routing, to canoes, gear and food, our goal is to help you have an unforgettable wilderness experience.  Call Drew or Adam at 800-223-6565 to set up your adventure!

South Kawishiwi River named to 'most endangered' list.
This is a photo of the beautiful South Kawishiwi River, BWCAW. Yesterday, it made the 'most endangered' list...
The environmental group American Rivers has placed Minnesota's South Kawishiwi River and the Boundary Waters lakes it flows into on the group's annual list of "most endangered rivers" because of the potential threat from copper mining. Please "like" this post and share with others so we can make sure the Boundary Waters remains protected. READ THE ARTICLE HERE

Blog - GearTies: by Cliff Jacobson
Occasionally, a product comes along that is so useful and so simple, you just gotta shake your head and wonder, "Why didn't I think of that?" GearTies, which are nothing more than plastic-wrapped wires are a case in point. They come in a variety of lengths, thicknesses and colors and are easily formed into hooks, coils and custom configurations. They are most popular for bundling electrical wires, but their uses are limited only by your imagination: Secure your GPS to a canoe thwart; bind a rolled tarp; hang a light inside your tent; secure paddles to canoe thwarts for portaging; hang a water bag or pack from a tree limb etc.

Okay, GearTies are not a "must have" item. But they are pretty cool. And they sure are useful. The more I use them the more uses I find for them. Really, now; why didn't I think of that?
