Boundary Waters Canoe Trips from Piragis

Piragis Northwoods Company

November 12, 2012 Email Newsletter

Greetings!

It seems like every week we get one day of snow and slush.  Of course it melts right away.  The leaves are down and the deer hunters are in the woods.  For the most part it is quiet around Ely and we find ourselves looking at pictures and postcards of trips past with fond memories.

We are planning next year's guided group trips now over cups of steaming coffee, or in Drew's case, Mountain Dew (not steaming).  Ordering next year's canoes and gear, evaluating the past season and planning ahead are on the daily agenda.  This gives us plenty of time to talk trips one-on-one with clients, so don't hesitate to call about next summer right now.

Under the white Winter blanket lie
Summer's memories, campfire's flames;
adventurous days and nights that cannot die.
Reprieve from daily toils, freedom exclaims.

Under the cold of the year's end -- burns
tomorrow's destinations, our heart's desire.
Following the rivers with each of their turns,
paddling new dreams, feeding unquenchable fire.

Under the crush and growth of ice,
maps move on, paths change, waters flow.
Life's secrets unseen, call out, entice;
wishes for Summer, missing it so.

We are happy to have you all as friends.  It sure is great to see you when you come to Ely.  We'd like you to introduce you to some of our close friends,

"The Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness".

If you don't yet know about this group, take some time to get acquainted.  Perhaps you'll even feel like joining.  As Sig Olsen said, "This is the most beautiful lake country on the continent. We can afford to cherish and protect it."

We hope to see you soon in beautiful Ely, Minnesota!

Rental Canoes Available Now!
Notes from the desk of Steve Schon:

Did you forget to reserve one of our rental canoes to pick up at the end of this past paddling season?  Don't despair, we still have good numbers of several models including MN 3's, MN II's, Boundary Water II's, Escapes and 17 Wenonahs.  The Boundary Waters II is an 18'6" model similar to the MN II but with a little rocker for more maneuverability, a little more leg room in the bow and fixed web seats.  The 17 Wenonah is a more traditional design with great stability for lakes and easy flowing rivers.

Boundary Waters Blog - WILDERNESS WISDOM  By Cliff Jacobson
A good one from our friend Cliff :)

Most mechanics rely on systematical trial and error to solve problems. They figure that if they replace enough parts, they'll eventually find the difficulty.  At the other extreme, are a small number of experts who, like my friend, Chic Sheridan, have the uncanny ability to correctly diagnose  problems on complex machines they've never seen before. For example, I once purchased an old Ford Pinto at an auction for next to nothing.  The car had a horrible clanging sound which was diagnosed as stuck valves. Repairs would cost hundreds of dollars!

I drove the beast over to Chic's house, hopeful he could provide a less costly solution.  "Add a quart of tranny fluid to the crankcase every time you change oil," he pronounced.  "Old mechanics trick--should free those valves in minutes: works much better than anything you can buy."

Chic's advice was sound:  I  drove the old Ford for two more years then traded it for another beater. On another occasion, a friend asked me to ask Chic about a clutch problem my wife Susie was having with her 1980 Saab.  The clutch wouldn't engage properly and the car wouldn't shift right.  A local foreign car repair shop told us the throw-out bearing and clutch plate were bad. "About 600 bucks," grinned the youthful mechanic.

Chic never owned or drove a foreign car.  A strong union man all his life, he supported "buy American", and a belief that domestic cars were, as he put it, "better than the trash that comes across the sea".  So it came as quite a surprise when he agreed to look at the old Saab.

The engine compartment of the Saab was a nightmare of wires, boxes and hoses. I was certain it would take a trained Saab mechanic to find the clutch, let alone fix it.  Chic peered wistfully under the hood, then asked if the clutch was mechanical or hydraulic.

 "Hydraulic," I said.

"I see someone just put a new master cylinder in here," he drawled. "Yeah, two weeks ago," I affirmed. Then there was a long silence, followed by..."Well I'll be damned, the idiot never hooked up the hydraulic line!" Chic shook his head in disgust, grabbed some tools, and a few minutes later the car shifted fine.  Cost of repair?  Two beers and a "thanks, good buddy!".

Tim & Steve...

I have been fortunate enough to make the Boundary Waters trip many times, but for my 'special one' and her kids this was a first. The boys, Teagen 10 & Treydon 13, weren't sure about ANY place that didn't have big screens and video games so it was my goal to get them hooked on what the Boundary Waters is.

They LOVED it! The boys learned some canoe basics in calm water and by the end of the trip they were really helping out going across the lakes. We managed to catch a 4 1/2 pound smallmouth bass the first morning and then they wanted to fish constantly the rest of the trip. They worked together exploring some of the falls, creeks and tiny rock islands - although Treydon did seem to think it would be nice to leave his little brother on one of the rocks out in the lake and pick him up later in the day. The trip was a huge success! Some wind, some rain, lots of great times and tons of family bonding. They all want to come back next summer for at least two trips with me.

Thanks for all your help over the years with suggestions and gear! I brought them into the store and they thought it was awesome! Nice job Piragis!!
