The Power of Hanukkah

What does, Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights have to do with Thanksgiving?

The original freedom fighters, which fought the Syrian Army for the freedom to practice the Jewish faith, were busy fighting instead of raising crops. So For Sukkot, the Jewish harvest festival, they had nothing to contribute to the temple as their thanksgiving offerings. So they kindled the eternal flame that, according to legend, burned for 8 nights; even though, they had oil for only one night.

Only one other time in the past 150 years has our national Thanksgiving coincided with Hanukkah, which is celebrated according to the Jewish not the Gregorian calendar. This will not happened again in our lifetime.

This Sunday: How does Hanukkah relate to each of us?

The meaning of Hanukkah is deeply rooted in the American value of religious tolerance and freedom. This is the light that Judaism keeps bright, religious tolerance for people of all faiths.

Dr. Holmes says "If one will have faith in himself, faith in his fellowmen, in the Universe and in God, that faith will light the place in himself and by the light of this faith, will be able to see that ALL IS GOOD. And the light shed by this faith will light the way for others."

GLOBAL EMERGENCY-HELP FOR THE PHILIPPINES

Tessie Goddard, the Captain of our Creativity Team, has raised over $19,000 for typhoon refuges. Thank you Tessie, and thank you to all who donated to our Silent Auction; we have donated over $300 to the IRC fund mentioned below.

A woman from the Philippines said on CNN. "We don't want your pity, just send help!"

Please donate to the International Relief Committee for refugees. Contribute this at the Symphony of Life Sunday service or take a check to Wells Fargo Bank - they have a drop box. Put the words Philippines typhoon in the memo line. (The IRC uses less than 7% of funds for administrative costs and has an A+ rating.)

You are cordially invited to share in this tribute to a wonderful gracious lady who visited us many times and lend your loving support to the Castagna family, which includes Liam and Gabrielle Castagna. Reception will follow.

Sun. December 15th -HOLIDAY MEET & MAKE ART FAIR & PARKING LOT SALE 1- 3:30 p.m. at the Women's Center featuring the artists of the Symphony of Life. If you are an artist with work you want to sell. We want to help you.

Sun. December 22nd LIVE NATIVITY - Each figure in the Nativity Scene has a special metaphysical meaning that applies to each one of us. Please join us for this special Sunday.

Tues. December 24th - All Faith Christmas Eve Service at Meditation Mount 7 p.m. Don't miss this beautiful CANDLE LIGHT service that honors all faiths. Savory & Sweet treats served following the Service. Please arrive in time to get a seat. Volunteers needed to help decorate, move chairs, bring food, serve and clean up.
