We prefer to call the Symphony of Life a spiritual center rather than a church. I think often about the difference between religion and spirituality. It seems that religion tends to divide us whereas spirituality tends to unite us. Religion tends to emphasize outer practice and conformity; spirituality emphasizes inner practice, personal transformation and the integration of higher levels of consciousness into our day-to-day living.

This distinction is important to me because great harm has been done over the ages in the name of religion. At the Symphony of Life, we are about seeing and focusing on the oneness of life, how you and I are the same rather than how we are different. In our ability to recognize our oneness is our salvation and the peace and freedom of the world. When we finally discover that the majority of the people everywhere want the same thing.....food for themselves and their children, love and connection to their families, warmth and shelter in a safe place, peace, joy and freedom, we will cease to look for the enemy in our brothers' eyes.

Symphony of Life Spiritual Cinema Night

Tonight's Spiritual Cinema will feature Samsara, a profound visual odyssey. Samsara is a Sanskrit word for "the ever turning wheel of life." With this as their theme, the filmmakers cross twenty-five countries and five continents to reveal the breadth and depth of the human experience, from the mundane to the miraculous. One reviewer called it, "Nothing short of astounding. The time-lapse footage is simply transcendent. The richness, depth and clarity of color and image achieved...give birth to the most beautiful visual meditation that I have ever witnessed."

Another film critic noted, "That Samsara is instantly one of the most visually stunning films in the history of cinema is reason enough to cherish it, but Director Ron Fricke and co-editor Mark Magidson achieve truly profound juxtapositions, brimming with meaning and emotion. The film will be shown tonight, Friday, June 28th, at Casa de la Luna, 710 S. la Luna Avenue. Doors open at 6:30 and the movie begins at 7:00 p.m. A discussion will follow the screening. The event is by donation ($5-$10 suggested although no one is turned away for lack of funds). There is parking on the property.

Symphony of Life Tithe to Los Padres Forrest Association

How pleased we were this past Sunday to be able to present a Certificate of Appreciation and our May tithe to Gordon Hemphill of the Los Padres Forrest Association. (We tithe 10% of our gross monthly income to various nonprofit organizations here in Ojai.) See Gordon and Rev. Karen below.
