Marilyn Miller, (805) 640-0498, for more information. October Spiritual Cinema This month's Spiritual Cinema Night will feature I'm Fine, Thanks, a documentary on pursuing one's own dream, instead of "the American dream." The film features the stories of people who have left "the good life" behind to follow their passions and the quiet desperation of those who haven't quite made the leap. The screening will take place on Friday, October 26, at Casa de La Luna, 710 La Luna Avenue, here in Ojai. Director Grant Peelle was a theater major in college and dreamed about making films as a kid. When he got married and started having kids of his own, he told himself his dream "wasn't realistic," so he put it away for a "sensible" career in real estate. Soon he'd acquired all the trappings of the good life, but felt that he himself was only acting, reading someone else's script instead of living his own life. He also realized that many of his associates felt the same way. He joined forces with a few film-making friends, launched a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter.com, and within a year had made his movie. More than that, he'd launched a movement. Here is the fledgling movement's manifesto: "We believe that the stories we captured deserve to be told and that by sharing them we can inspire thousands and thousands of people to take action and change their lives for the better. Our goal is to ignite a movement of people who are tired of settling for mediocrity. We want to eliminate 'getting by,' 'doing fine,' 'could be worse,' and 'can't complain' from the vocabulary of our modern culture. We want to rally together a like-minded group of people who are fed up with living life through someone else's script, who are ready to live life on their OWN terms. Together, with your help, we believe we can challenge people to dig up their childhood dreams....to tap back into their deepest passions....and to take action to make those values more of a priority in their life moving forward." A discussion will follow the screening. Doors open at 6:30 and the movie begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. Although the event is free, donations are gratefully accepted and go to Casa de La Luna Retreat, whose state-of-the-art multimedia studio is ideally suited to these and other gatherings. There is parking on the property. Symphony of Life Book Club We have a wonderful book club at the Symphony of Life which meets on the first Friday of every month at one of the participant's homes. We meet at 7:00 p.m. for a lively discussion of the month's current selection, followed by a wonderful dessert treat. For the month of October, we are reading The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. You are welcome to join in at any time. Our next meeting will be held on Friday, November 2, at Tiese and Bob Quinn's home, 7 Foothill Road, Ojai 93023. Contact Peggie Williamson, (805) 640-2450, for further information. Thank You Dinner On Saturday, September 29, Rev. They are the members of our newly formed Creativity Committee: Tessie Goddard, Sherry Owen, Donna Elam, and Valerie Freeman. We are honoring them first for their inspiration to form a new committee and secondly, for their effectiveness in already creating a wonderful, successful party event which was held at Sherry's home on Friday, September 14. We thank you Creativity Committee and we look forward to your next event! Who you are does make a difference!
