Greetings,

Driver health is definitely one of the most overlooked topics in transportation. While your chance of being in an accident is higher, you are much more likely to suffer health problems versus anything else. As I have mentioned before it is easy to overlook but can have dangerous consequences if you do. Here are some of the things you can do to help prevent future health problems.

DRIVER'S HEALTH SEGMENT

Health

There are a lot of ways to get injured on the road. From accidents to poor eating, a driver has to watch out for a number of hazards.

I just read about a risk that has always been there but I never thought about it. That risk..is skin cancer. According to doctors, drivers have an inflated risk of cancer on their left side due to UV rays coming through the glass. The risk is significant but there are some new solutions in place to protect you on those long hauls.

Due to a clarification in the laws of tinting glass on vehicles the Department of Transportation has allowed tinting to a certain degree to protect drivers. There are also some additional benefits to drivers and fleets. According to a letter from the International Window Film Association tinting:

  • Blocks UV Radiation
  • Reduces fading and interior upholstery cracking
  • Increases Skin Protection
  • Reduces Heat
  • Increases air-conditioning efficiency
  • Improves occupant comfort
  • Reduces Glare
  • Lessens eye fatigue
  • Improves vision and safety

While skin cancer does not get the publicity in transportation publications like some topics, it is still of vital importance. The health benefits of tinting the windows far outweigh the costs in the long run.

GET PAID TO LOSE WEIGHT ON THE ROAD?

Weight Loss

I just read about a program that pays obese truckers to lose weight. According to Overdrive magazine, the Healthy Trucking Association gave thousands of truckers the opportunity to earn $800 by losing weight. What I am most thrilled about though, is that there was a real effort to help truckers lose weight instead of just lip service.

This particular promotion gave:

  1. A reward for people to lose weight
  2. Medical guidance to help you lose weight

Coming from a culture that revolves around food, being told you need lose weight is not enough to help you lose weight. Likewise, expecting anyone to walk into a fast food restaurant and order the salad while being assaulted by the smell of artery clogging burgers and fries every second, is delusional.

I tried. I have walked into fast food restaurants with every intention of making a healthier choice. Before opening the door I had the willpower of a professional athlete. Something happens though from the time I enter the restaurant to the time I come up to the counter to order. On every side I am reminded of how much tastier the non healthy choice is . Every picture is of a large hamburger cooked to perfection and a bun so big you could barely hold it in your hand. Conspicuously absent are posters encouraging me to watch my weight. There are no cardiology meal deals with a free toy if I make a better choice. Thus I get up to the order station and the inevitable happens...

I cave and order the unhealthy delicious choice

This brings us back to this program by the Healthy Trucking Association. If anyone reading this has done the program, I would like to hear about how things went.
