NewsletterLate Fall 2012

Greetings,

There is always a way to build a better mousetrap. In our industry the innovations or "mousestraps" seem to revolve around a few basic themes. Saving money, saving fuel, protecting cargo are all the "mousetraps" we want better solutions for. Well this newsletter features some ways to achieve these goals. While these solutions may not be for everyone, it is still interesting to see what is available and maybe even save some money.

NOISE REDUCTION ASPHALT

Asphalt

Some inventions or innovations are just too good not to mention. One product I saw mentioned in a California paper called TheFridayflyer.com is noise reduction asphalt. Your reaction is probably the same as mine when I first heard it.

Noise reduction, one more thing to worry about and spend money on.

But that is only half the story. Noise reduction is only one of the benefits. Noise reduction asphalt is made from scraps of recycled tires mixed with traditional asphalt. So not only does it keep thousands of tires out of landfills, it lasts longer than traditional roads. It also eliminates the need for giant sound walls lining the highway. This alone is a huge savings to the taxpayer.

Now..you are talking!

By Using Recycled Tire Asphalt :

  • I am saving money as a taxpayer since we don't have to surface the roads as much or spend money on sound proof retaining walls
  • I am saving the environment
  • We are recycling and getting noise reduction as a bonus.

So with all these benefits, the question is not why should we pave our roads with recycled tire asphalt. The question should be why are we NOT paving our roads with it right now?

POWER HOOKUPS AT TRUCK STOPS

Electric Charging Station

If you are not already doing this, it might be time to take a second look whether you are running a fleet or are an independent owner operator. Electrical hookups to prevent idling are still a solid investment when visiting a truck stop.

While power hook ups at truck stops are nothing new, the number of them is increasing. Part of this is due to the Federal government offering grants to build them. Another even bigger reason is that they work. The benefits are bigger than you might think. According to one source power hookups at truck stops:

  • Can reduce energy consumption by over 50%
  • Can reduce pollution and emissions in the air

I don't know of anyone who would not benefit by cutting their fuel bill so get in the habit of using this if you are not already. The availability of more power hookups at truck stops should make it much easier to get into the practice of doing this.

SAVE $10,000 A YEAR!
$$$

What could you do with an extra 10,000 dollars a year?

We have all read the reports about fuel saving devices that we can put on our trucks to use less diesel. There have been countless stories about large companies saving millions in fuel because of a few cents spread over a gazillion trucks (I know this is not a real number but it proves my point). This raises the question:

What if you are an owner operator with only one truck?

Well I read about an owner operator who tried the areoflex skirts and had positive results. According to Jim Schilling in a Truckinginfo.com article the savings and efficiency gains of using the truck skirts were incredible. According to the report, the truck skirt:

1.    Reduced the owner operator's fuel cost by $10,000 a year

2.    Improved the ride by bringing greater stability to the vehicle

3.    Picked up 6 to 7 percent more miles per gallon

Obviously some trucks just cannot be fitted with skirts, but if yours can, the savings will more than cover the costs.
