TOPDear Service Unit Leadership Volunteers.

Welcome to TEAM TALK - the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, Inc. online newsletter keeping administrative volunteers informed of all the great things being done by and for Girl Scouts. Administrative volunteers are asked to send out emails, present at upcoming meetings, etc. sharing or reinforcing the information contained in this online newsletter to appropriate volunteers.

Go Green!  While there may be some sections of this email you need to email or share, save paper and avoid printing.

CheckHelp us thank and appreciate all our volunteers for all their hard work and dedication to the girls.  To help ensure a smooth transition into the new Girl Scout membership year, we ask that the service unit teams/coaches/managers help guide the troops with the checklist below.  Encourage troops to:

  • Plan an end of the year court of awards ceremony or participate in a service unit or county bridging ceremony.
  • Recognize individuals and/or organizations that helped the troop during the year.
  • Survey the girls and adults as to their intent on returning to the program next year.  What Journey would the girls like to work on in the future, assess what roles the parents might consider undertaking to help lead the troop.
  • Renew all members Girl Scout membership for the new 2014 membership year by June 14th.
  • Complete the troop's financial report, ensuring ending balances match the bank statements.  Report is due to the service unit June 30th.
  • Notify service unit team and/or membership specialist of the status of the troop leadership team for the upcoming year.

If troop leadership is changing or if troop is disbanding,

please guide the troop with steps below.

Non returning Girl Scout troop leaders and advisors

To ensure girls continue to enjoy and participate together as a troop:

  • Secure a replacement leader.  Reach out to the parents/guardians in the troop and share with them how they can remain involved with this group of girls to ensure the existence of the troop.  This will secure continuous programming for the girls.
  • Keep the service unit team, coach, and membership specialist informed.  When a potential adult(s) has been identified to assume the leadership role for the troop, please pass along their contact information.  This will aide in the processing of their volunteer file (volunteer application and background check) and training.
  • Secure troop supplies.  In the event that volunteers are not secured to continue the troop, please collect troop supplies.  Troop supplies include items such as: troop check book and financial report, badges and patches that the girls have earned, and any equipment/books that was purchased with Girl Scout funds.
  • Promote other Girl Scout volunteer opportunities.  There are many exciting, flexible, and rewarding volunteer opportunities available that can be tailored to match skills or current schedule.  Perhaps leading a troop was not the best fit, the Volunteer Resources department will be available to explore more of these possibilities with volunteers!

cookieAs we've now officially wrapped up the last bits and pieces of the 2013 Cookie Program, I'm happy to share some statistics and numbers of how the sale went.  Please share this information with your troop volunteers.  If you have questions or would like more specific numbers for your Service Unit, please contact Corinne at corinnew@gsgcf.org or 941.921.5358 ext. 340.

  • Total sales were 1,094,255 packages of cookies.  While this is a 2.5% decrease compared to 2012's record setting sales, it is still a really high number and a reflection of all the hard work our girls, families, and volunteers put into the Cookie Program.  There are lots of reasons to celebrate for sure!
  • Troops earned more than $656,000 in troop proceeds.  (This number does not include Super Troop bonuses which have not yet been reviewed and awarded.)
  • 117 girls sold over 1000+ packages, including 9 girls who sold 3000 packages or more.
  • Our council Per-Girl Average was 217 packages per girl.  That is much higher than the national averages.
  • There was a 4.6% increase in Mints for the Military, and more than 34,000 packages were purchased for the military.

Obviously, there was a lot of hard work put in and everyone had a hand in making 2013 a successful Cookie Program.  There are a few service units that definitely deserve an extra pat on the back, though.  The service units below all had increases of 10% or more over 2012 as well.  Truly an impressive accomplishment!

  • Charlotte 11 - 10% increase
  • Hardee - 13% increase
  • Lee 11 - 20.5% increase
  • Collier 12 - 27% increase
  • Hendry Glades - 28% increase
  • Collier 13 - 37% increase

assessment
Self-Assessment

Volunteers are vital to the Girl Scout Movement. Part of the volunteer management process is an annual self-assessment. We want everyone to connect with their Coach, Service Unit Manager, or Membership Specialist and discuss how their year appointment has been going, what things they would like to accomplish for girls or the service unit going forward. It is also a chance for them to shine by showing off what they have accomplished this year. Please take a few minutes to complete your own self-assessment form and turn it in, they are required for reappointment to position or appointment to a new position. See your Membership Specialist for copies.

Once you see how easy it is, please make a plan to collect them from all volunteers in your service unit and then get them submitted for their volunteer file.

stayconnected
Girls Staying Connected

Many troops stop meeting over the summer and girls can lose their connection to Girl Scouts. Share some of these ideas with your leaders so they can help girls stay connected to their sister Girl Scouts.
  • Occasional emails just saying hello, try to start a email chain where each girl forwards to another girl on the list.
  • An overnight activity to just check in with each other and maybe plan for some fall activities.
  • A pool party or family picnic.
  • Bowling, Skating or Movie night on a hot summers evening.
  • Encourage the girls to work on badges or Journey's on their own, they can always share what they did with the troop at an upcoming meeting. They can even make their own badge. They start with the subjects that mean most to them, find ways to explore those interests, and at the end, reward themselves with a special badge that they design to represent how they earned it. Check out the gsmakeyourown.com website . Girl Scouts get to make their own badge once a year. Leaders can find the information about the "five steps" to earn the Make Your Own Badge in the back of the badge section in the Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting and share this fun summer activity with their troop.

FSPThe Family Support Plan is a family and volunteer giving campaign that makes Girl Scouting possible for all girls who want those lifelong memories that being a Girl Scout provides. We have asked you to roll out the material, encourage and help every leader make the ask to her families, but did we ask you? Every dollar gifted can make a difference. As the Service Unit Leadership Team we encourage you to think about whether being a part of Girl Scouts has mattered in your life, in a girl's life. If you believe that the memories girls are making in your service unit should be available to all girls in the future then make your own personal FSP gift.

YOU make it possible for girls to experience Girl Scouting at its best.

Please make your gift today!

CALLING ALL GIRLS THAT LIKE TO SHOP

The Junior Sales Specialist Program is back this summer for its third year!  The Program is a week-long interactive experience where girls learn real-life job skills and become trained to volunteer in the council shops.  Girls will complete a job application, resume, cover letter, interviews, and shop training.  After completing the program, Junior Sales Specialists have the opportunity to volunteer in the shop as their schedules allow.

The 2013 Junior Sales Specialist Program will be held June 5th - 8th.  Interested families can find more information and get signed up on the GSGCF Activity Finder soon.

Space is limited, so please encourage interested girls to sign up early!

Cookie Dough Cards are on Their Way!

All girls who sold at least 50 packages during the 2013 Cookie Program have earned Cookie Dough. Cookie Dough cards are mailed directly to each girl's home, and are on their way now! Girls can use their Cookie Dough cards to purchase items in the GSGCF Girl Scout shops, to register for council programs, or toward the cost of 2013 Girl Scout summer day camp. Girl Scout Juniors and older may bank their Cookie Dough to be used for Girl Scout activities in a future year.

All 2013 Cookie Dough cards expire on September 6, 2013. Cookie Dough that has not been spent or banked by that time will be lost.

If volunteers or parents have any questions about using their Cookie Dough, please direct them to Shannon Allison, shannona@gsgcf.org or 941.921.5358 ext. 315.
