Greetings!

I am thrilled to report that the September issue of the widely read education journal, Educational Leadership, is focusing for the first time in this publication's history on resilience in schools! AND, the September/October issue of School Library Monthly will also focus on how schools can effectively foster student resiliency...

READ ON FOR DETAILS, INCLUDING WHY THIS NEWS IS SO IMPORTANT....

Also, I am traveling to communities that have found creative ways to fund resiliency training, resiliency curriculum, and other resiliency programming. Details about this funding are included below as well.

National Publications Focus on Resiliency!

...which shows the growing awareness that effectively fostering resiliency is crucially important. Building resiliency is linked to increased academic success and increased life success. Building resiliency is also synonymous with building mental health.

Creative Ways to Fund Resiliency Training and Programs
sun

Last year, I provided resiliency training and copies of my bookResiliency In Action: Practical Ideas for Overcoming Risks and Building Strengths in Youth, Families, & Communities in Hudson, Ohio. The training - for a large audience of educators and social service providers - as well as the books were funded by a grant from The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, a local foundation that focuses on improving mental health and education. I am learning a great resource for resiliency funding is LOCAL COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS.

I just returned from training educators from several Newark, New Jersey schools. A group of schools in Newark will also be providing a resiliency curriculum for students, starting next fall. This training, too, was funded by a LOCAL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, The Newark Educational Foundation, which is also funding the curriculum. As resiliency gains more attention, it is even more likely local foundations will fund resiliency training and programs.

One big advantage to applying to a local foundation for funding: It is easier! Local foundations are concerned more about improving their communities than the grant-writing experience of applicants.

MY ADVICE: Search for local foundations in your community. I am hearing reports that resiliency funding by local foundations is gaining in popularity... (Just google your city or county name and the word "foundation" and see what comes up!)
