Greetings!

A one-of-a-kind program started at Hill Air Force Base is using strategies from the resiliency research to significantly reduce military suicide. I interacted with 9 "Wingman Advocates" from Hill at my Resiliency Training of Trainers Oct. 1 & 2, and am so impressed with this resiliency-building program! Read on for details...including how this program is similar to a resilency-research-congruent secondary school program.

AND I am extending the deadline to enter my 35-Resiliency Workbook giveaway until Oct. 26. I am also offering to travel to your organization and provide FREE training with the purchase of at least 300 workbooks.

The Resiliency-Based Military Program that is Reducing Military Suicides
Bestmetraining.Oct1&2TOT

The nine people from Hill AFB who attended by Oct. 1 & 2 Resiliency Training Program Training of Trainers (see photo to the right) shared details of the innovative program there that uses resiliency strategies to reduce suicide rates, and said these rates have declined more than 50% since the program was implemented just a few years ago.

The program, called the Wingman Advocate program, is unique in the military though its success is prompting consideration of expansion to other bases:

  1. It trains soldiers and civilians on the base with "natural helping inclinations" to be a compassionate, listening ear; an advocate for accessing resources; and a "friend in need".
  2. These "natural helpers" are not housed in some remote office: THEY ARE IMBEDDED IN DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS ON THE BASE.
  3. Their mission is to keep a lookout for a peer that might be struggling, and to be available to anyone who needs the resiliency-building factor of a "caring and supportive" friend and advocate.
  4. Throughout the base, those in authority are encouraged to refer someone in emotional need to "the Wingman Advocate." This approach greatly reduces the still-prevalent stigma for seeking help that exists in military culture.

"Overwhelmingly, Wingman Advocates (are) chosen for their genuineness and authenticity," said Rita Roybal, Wingman Advocate director. She added that the positive outcomes of the program are largely the result of their "emotional intelligence" and the advocates' "willingness to make a difference in the lives of those they touch."

I share Rita's perspective after interacting for two days with these amazing human beings, and hearing their stories:

They shared one example of a colleague who was great at this job, but was so overweight he was about to lose it. So, two of the Wingman Advocates met him at 6 a.m. every day for several weeks to help him start an exercise program that eventually resulted in a big weight loss.

The "Natural Helpers" Program in Middle and High Schools Uses Similar Resiliency-Building Strategies
ResiliencyWheel.Don

Natural Helpers is a peer-to-peer helping program for secondary school students that has been successful across the country for more than three decades.

Like the Hill AFB Wingman Advocate Program, Natural Helpers is based on the premise that when (young) people have problems, they most often and most easily turn to peers whom they trust for help, and that within every (school) organization an informal "helping network" exists. The program seeks to identify this informal network of young people who represent all the different subgroups within schools and provide training and support to those who serve as "natural helpers."

Resiliency research tells us that the most powerful resiliency-builder is genuine caring and support from others. Programs that help the most, according to researchers Emmy Werner and Ruth Smith, "are those that provide support similar to an extended family."

As I have diagrammed in The Resiliency Wheel, caring and support, as well as messages of high expectations for success, opportunities to help as well as be helped, positive bonds, good boundary setting, and other social and emotional skills development (lifeskills training) build resiliency. These are all characteristics of a (healthy) extended family.

The Hill AFB Wingman Advocates program and the Natural Helpers program provides these protective conditions.
