Government Affairs Update

SB 90 which relates to the Compressed Natural Gas rebate program has made it to the Governor's desk. Our contract lobbyist, The Advocacy Group, is currently tracking the bill and connecting with the Governor's office as to whether or not, the Governor will sign SB90 into law. Additionally, I sent a letter of support for SB90 to the Governor. Furthermore, we have begun to reach out to the Hillsborough legislative delegation to ask the delegation Chair to provide a letter of support for our regional farecard initiative to attach to our federal TIGER application. Since our D.C meetings with U.S Senator Bill Nelson, Congressman David Jolly, Congresswoman Kathy Castor, Congressman Gus Bilirakis, Congressman Vern Buchanan and Congressman Dennis Ross. We have been in contact with their respective staffs to produce a joint letter of support for our TIGER application. Each member of the regional federal delegation has also agreed to put in a call to the Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx in support of our farecard initiative.
Stay-cation Program Update

STAY-cation Program Means Free Rides from March 1 through June 10!

Since March 1, the STAY-cation program has been providing youth 18 and under unlimited bus riding on any HART Local, Limited Express, MetroRapid or In-Towner, as well as HARTFlex services. Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART), Hillsborough County Public Schools and the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners have partnered to offer this program. The partnership, championed by Commissioner Kevin Beckner, is designed to encourage more students to take advantage of public transportation and get in the habit of using transit instead of driving.

Below, you will see the updated numbers to date for the Stay-cation program. All the agencies involved will continue to promote the Stay-cation pilot program in order to continue to spread the word about this innovative program for Hillsborough County Students. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

HART Plans Minor Schedule Changes March 27

As part of its continued commitment to providing ease of access and convenience for its patrons, the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) will implement minor service changes effective Sunday, March 27. HART makes regular service adjustments three times a year in response to public feedback collected prior to each change, and proposes potential adjustments to improve safety and efficiency. Routes are selected for adjustment based upon demonstrated ridership and input via the Customer Service database.

The service changes scheduled to begin Sunday, March 27 include the following:
  • Route 4 - The AM detour before 9:00 AM at MacDill will become permanent.
  • Route 16 - Will have an additional trip leaving Northwest Transfer Center at 8:15 PM during the weekdays.
  • Route 47LX - The 4:40 PM trip out of Marion Transit Center will continue from the South 301 Park-n-Ride to Amazon Fulfillment Center.
Minor time adjustments
  • Limited/Express Routes 24X, 25LX, 27LX, 28X will have minor time adjustments.
  • Local Routes 31, 36, 41 will have minor time adjustments.

HART Wellness Program Update

HART was well represented at the 2016 Shamrock Classic in Brandon. We had over 30 HART employees participate in the event. Glenn Lindie and Matt Montijo picked up 1st place trophies for their age group and Carol Webster picked up a trophy for my her age group as well. Feedback received from those that attended the race was great and they were already inquiring about the agency's participation next year. The money raised benefits Moffitt Cancer Center.

CEO Spotlight

New Vehicles Are on the Way

More eco-friendly HART vehicles are on the way!HART is purchasing 15 Gillig 40ft low floor fixed route buses as well as 13 Mobility Ventures - MV-1 paratransit sedans. These vehicles will be powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).CNG is a very clean burning fuel which produces significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional gasoline or diesel fuels. In addition, CNG is a domestically produced fuel, reducing our dependence on foreign fuels. The cost of CNG is also significantly lower than gasoline or diesel fuels.  Both the Gillig Buses and the MV-1 sedans are very similar to the most recent HART vehicle acquisitions which have proven to be comfortable, reliable and efficient additions to the HART fleet. The MV-1 sedans are scheduled for delivery in July 2016 and the Gillig buses are scheduled for delivery in early summer of 2017. HART is also scheduled to receive 13 new Gillig 40ft fixed route buses in August of this year from a previous bus order.
