At HART, every day is Earth Day. But on Earth Day 2013, HART is taking extra steps to protect the planet; passengers can ride HART free of charge when boarding with a friend.
Riding transit can reduce a commuter's carbon footprint by 20 pounds. With Earth Day approaching, there's no better time to explore green transportation options by riding free with a friend, while reducing the carbon footprint by 40 pounds.
"As we join together to observe Earth Day," said Dr. Steven Polzin, HART Board Vice Chairman, it is fitting that the color scheme for the new HART MetroRapid is green. HART continues to proactively implement initiatives intended to conserve energy and protect the environment."
Find out how much you can help the planet by using the Carbon Savings Calculator, accessible on the HART of Green section of www.goHART.org.
Here are just some of HART's "Go-Green" practices:
- The entire HART fleet is EPA-certified, and 38 percent of HART vehicles utilize low emission engine technology.
- HART is making the switch to Compressed Natural Gas fuel, a cleaner burning, more efficient fuel affordably produced here in the USA.
- HART was specially selected to participate in the Federal Transit Administration's 2013 Environmental Management Systems Training and Technical Assistance Program.
- HART's bus washing facility was recently upgraded with new equipment that reclaims 95 percent of the water used.
- HART recently earned its first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification -for renovation of its 40-year old 21st Avenue operations facility.
- HART was awarded Clean Air Partnership and Green Fleet designations by the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County.
"HART also recognizes and appreciates that one of the main reasons why many people choose public transit is because it offers a positive, carbon footprint-reducing alterative to private transportation," added Dr. Polzin. "We thank everyone in the community for their continued support of HART and for going green to protect our shared and precious natural resources."
Passengers boarding together ride free. This promotion is not valid for use of HARTPlus or the TECO Line Streetcar Line.
