Great Bend Regional Hospital Earns Gold Seal for Mammography

After months of reporting and an elaborate inspection, Great Bend Regional Hospital was recently awarded a 3-year term of accreditation in mammography from the American College of Radiology (ACR) and renewed its certification with the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA). This dual process involves daily record keeping, annual reporting, and the tracking of numerous statistics to meet and exceed the federal Mammogram Quality Standards Act (MQSA).

"The reason every hospital undergoes rigorous quality inspections is to help make sure that we are producing the best quality images," says Heather Ewy, GBRH Radiologic Technologist. "There are over a dozen categories we have to report on, with hundreds of checkpoints we have to pass. It's a hard process, but ultimately it means we're doing everything we can to give our patients the best possible care."

In addition to the ongoing reporting required by the state and federal governments, part of the accreditation process involves ensuring that all the hospital's radiologists and technologists are up-todate on their continuing education hours, and numerous samples of mammogram images are provided and inspected by the accrediting bodies. A state inspector also visits the facility to check up on the record keeping and quality control aspects of the department's operations.

"Following all the rules, mandates, and reporting criteria is of utmost importance, and most of it is done in the background where a patient will never see it," says Bill Henderson, Imaging Department Supervisor at Great Bend Regional Hospital. "Maintaining our gold seal for mammography is no easy task, but it is part of our dedication to patient care."

Great Bend Regional Hospital uses the latest in digital mammography with state-of-the-art equipment designed to quickly and effectively assess the condition of the breast tissue to diagnose cancers and breast diseases. It is recommended that women over the age of 40 schedule a mammogram every year, as breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women in the United States. To schedule your annual mammogram, contact the local healthcare leader at 620-792-8833.

Fairy Garden Class

June 4th @ 9:30 AM

Kansas Wetlands Education Center, 592 NE K-156 Highway, Great Bend, KS

Where do fairies live? At your house in the fairy garden you'll create for them.

This class is designed for adults, who may bring children or grandchildren who are at least 8 years old to help with the creative process. It is small, intricate work, so please bear that in mind when bringing children. Registration is required, with the deadline of June 1, by calling 1-877-243-9268. The maximum class size is 15.
We'll use items from nature to create a fairy house from a small gourd, twig furniture, arbors and/or bridges and a maple seed dragon fly. The only limit is your imagination.

We will supply the gourds, plants and other items and you supply the container, which can range from floral containers to antiques such as enamel ware bowls and pots. The containers should be at least 12 inches wide but no larger than 18 inches wide. Bring other items you'd like to add too!

Cheyenne Bottoms Naturalists: Gardening with Native Plants

June 25 @ 9:00 AM

Kansas Wetlands Education Center, 592 NE K-156 Highway, Great Bend, KS

Adding native plants to your garden is a great way to improve wildlife habitat. Native plants provide food and shelter for wildlife in several ways, including producing seeds and nectar as well as being hosts for native insects. Additionally, native plants will provide what wildlife needs at the right time. Many introduced and exotic garden plants either don't provide what wildlife needs at all, or produce it too early or too late to do wildlife any good. As an extra bonus, hardy native species are usually more drought tolerant, and take much less care and watering than exotic garden plants.

Have we piqued your interest?  If you want to know more about gardening with native plants, come out to the KWEC for a fun, FREE morning of gardening.  Enjoy browsing our pollinator garden while you sip a refreshing summer spritzer, and take home your own native plant seeds, along with tons of great information on gardening with natives.
No registration is needed for this fun, FREE program!  If you've got questions, give us a call at 1-877-243-9268.

Kansas Jobs & Employment Report

TOPEKA, Kan. - The state's April seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.8 percent. This was down from 3.9 percent in March and from 4.2 percent in April 2015.

"Kansas' unemployment rate dropped to 3.8 percent in April," said Kansas Secretary of Labor, Lana Gordon. "Six thousand seven hundred fewer people received unemployment benefits this month compared to April of 2015."

The preliminary seasonally adjusted job estimates from the Kansas Department of Labor and Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate Kansas nonfarm jobs decreased by 3,700 from March. Since last month, Kansas private sector jobs decreased by 3,000. The largest private sector over the month job decrease was in Leisure and Hospitality.

Over the year, Kansas lost 600 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs. Kansas gained 800 private sector jobs since April 2015.

Kansas not seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs decreased by 2,900, a 0.2 percent decrease since April 2015. Not seasonally adjusted figures show Kansas lost 1,600 private sector jobs since last year, or 0.1 percent. The state gained 9,100 total not seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs over the month, or 0.7 percent. Since March, not seasonally adjusted private sector jobs increased by 10,000, or 0.9 percent.

"Private sector job estimates showed a decline since last April," said Emilie Doerksen, Labor Economist, Kansas Department of Labor. "Service providing industries have shown growth, but these increases continue to be offset by losses in Mining and Construction."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics revised seasonally adjusted preliminary total nonfarm job estimates for March upward by 400 jobs, from 1,398,800 to 1,399,200. Seasonally adjusted private sector jobs were revised upwards by 300 jobs, from 1,142,500 to 1,142,800.

Seasonally adjusted estimates for April show that the state's labor force declined by 3,141 to 1,509,389. Of those in the labor force, 1,452,055 Kansans were employed and 57,334 were unemployed. This month's net change in the labor force was attributable to 934 fewer Kansans counted as employed and 2,207 fewer unemployed.

Over the year, the labor force expanded by 15,778 persons, with an increase of 21,664 in employment and a decrease of 5,886 in unemployment.

The labor force participation rate was 68.1 percent, down from 68.2 percent in March and up from 67.8 percent last April.

Information on procedures for producing Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS), e.g., labor force, estimates is available on the BLS website here. Procedures for producing Current Employment Statistics (CES), e.g., nonfarm jobs, estimates are available on the BLS website here.
