Nex-Tech Wireless Toy Drive Underway
Nex-Tech Annual Toy Drive

Thanks to the generosity of those within the community, the holidays will be brighter for deserving children in our area this year. The Nex-Tech Wireless annual toy drive has kicked off and will continue until the end of December. Toys are being collected at all Nex-Tech Wireless and Nex-Tech Wireless Authorized Agent locations throughout central and western Kansas.

The Great Bend Nex-Tech location will be collecting toys for the local Toys for Tots. In the 2014 drive, over 500 toys were collected. Anyone is encouraged to donate a toy for the drive, regardless of your wireless provider.

Making the holidays even brighter this year, anyone who donates a toy will be entered into a drawing for a $250 Visa Gift Card. Additionally, the winner can choose their favorite local charity to receive $250.00. The winner will be announced on January 8, 2016 and will then choose the local charity to receive $250 from Nex-Tech Wireless.

To donate a new toy to help a child in this community, or for more information on Nex-Tech Wireless, stop by Nex-Tech located at 3700 10th St in Great Bend. For a complete list of locations visit www.nex-techwireless.com or call 877-621-2600.

"The annual toy drive is a great way for Nex-Tech Wireless to support local organizations and children this holiday season," stated Jon Lightle, President and CEO for Nex-Tech Wireless."We are grateful for everyone that donates a toy this holiday season, and helping make the drive a success. It's an important time of year in our communities for everyone to be reminded of the opportunity to give back, and not just receive."

Great Bend Regional Hospital Announcements
Milestone Reception Held for Dr. Roger Marshall

After helping deliver more than 7,000 babies over 28 years, Dr. Roger Marshall will be specializing his practice to focus solely on gynecology as of January 1, 2016. To celebrate all that he has accomplished and contributed to our hospital and our community, Great Bend Regional Hospital hosted a special Milestone reception on Saturday, December 5th. Activities for children and families drew a crowd of more than 100 people, and everyone enjoyed refreshments and a group photo with Dr. Marshall.

Central Kansas Family Practice Invests in New Lab Equipment

Central Kansas Family Practice (CKFP) is one of the few family practices in the area to offer an in-house laboratory. Recently, the practice invested in a new piece of laboratory equipment that is improving the relevance of the lab and its services. The new tabletop chemistry analyzer is an Alfa Wasserman Axcel, an upgrade from the machine they were using previously. Not only does it save space compared to the larger, old-fashioned machine but it performs a large variety of chemistry tests to help the CKFP staff provide results to its patients as quickly as possible.

"This new machine allows CKFP to do in-house testing, whereas a lot of other family practice offices have to send lab work off to another facility," says Jean Powers, Manager for the CKFP Laboratory. "The tests that are done regularly to monitor diabetes, cholesterol, liver function, uric acid, and many others are done frequently to keep an eye on the patient's health, so doing them in-house saves them time."

The lab has also improved the methods for INR testing. The international normalized ratio (INR) is used to monitor patients taking blood-thinning medications. Previously, patients had to have blood drawn so it could be spun for fifteen minutes before the chemistry could be analyzed. Now these tests are done with a finger stick, which is faster and less invasive for the patient. It also helps improve the efficiency of the lab operation overall.

Central Kansas Family Practice is the area's largest primary care office, with seven providers seeing patients Monday through Friday. Located at 1309 Polk Street in Great Bend, patients can be seen by Dr. Perry Smith, Dr. Jeffrey Brozek, Dr. Teri Turkle-Huslig, Dr. Stanley Hatesohl, Dr. Charles Keener, nurse practitioner Elise Snapp, or physician's assistant Gina Westhoff. CKFP is an affiliate of Great Bend Regional Hospital.

Light Display Spreading Holiday Cheer at Great Bend Regional Hospital

A new holiday light display adorns the west surgery entrance at Great Bend Regional Hospital, spreading holiday cheer to all who see it. The display was purchased through a live auction donation at the USD 428 Education Foundation Dinner last month. Stueder Contractors usually places this display on their building on 10th Street, but made a decision this year to donate it for the good of the foundation.

"Education is extremely important, and we wanted to do something new and different to draw some attention and funds to the foundation's auction," says Terry Stueder, owner of the local plumbing and HVAC company. "Since it is definitely Christmas time, we thought the light display was something creative that would go over well and it did."

Great Bend Regional Hospital purchased the rights to use the lights on their building for the remainder of the Christmas season. The multi-colored strands of lights and Christmas tree decorations were installed over the weekend by Chad and Stephanie Boone, owners of Illuminations Holiday Displays, and are now available for viewing every evening between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. "The lights are custom choreographed to three Christmas songs, and anyone can enjoy the show by tuning into the special FM frequency through their car stereo," Stephanie says. "We are looking forward to working with the hospital and are proud that they chose to support the education foundation alongside Stueder Contractors."

Anyone wishing to enjoy the free holiday lights display can visit the hospital campus after dark and view the show from the surgical parking lot. It is requested that the main driveway be kept clear for hospital patients, guests, and ambulance traffic.

"It's exciting that we can accomplish two things with our recent donation to the Education Foundation," says Brent Hanson, CEO for Great Bend Regional Hospital. "Supporting grant-making for the teachers in our school district was worthwhile in itself, but providing a fun holiday light show for our patients and area residents was a nice extra incentive. We hope the community will come and enjoy the display between now and the end of the year."
