Construction on the fiber project continues to advance in Great Bend. Nex-Tech Engineering Manager Terry Peterson said crews are currently installing fiber along 10th Street just east of Patton, as well as four blocks west of Main Street, going east along 10th Street. According to Peterson, "Work will continue until the ground freezes for the winter. Once the ground thaws in the spring, construction will continue, with the project expected to be complete by the end of 2016."

Rick Taylor, Business Sales Representative, added, "The fiber Nex-Tech is installing will provide businesses a distinct advantage by giving them access to our powerful Fiber-To-The-Premise connection. Fiber Internet is extremely reliable and can deliver incredible speeds up to 1 Gig. It is that time of year again...Christmas Bird Count (CBC) season. From December 14 through the first week of January, families, scientists, students and bird enthusiasts of all ages will take part in CBC's across the U.S. in one of the best forms of citizen science. During the count, volunteers go out in small groups and count and record every bird they see on their assigned route. Results of these counts are used by scientists across the US for assessing conservation efforts and tracking overall health and population numbers of bird species. And, CBC's are a great way for beginner bird watchers to learn from more experienced bird watchers.

About 40 different CBCs are held annually across Kansas, including ones at Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Widlife Refuge.  You can check a list of other CBC's in Kansas at ksbirds.org

If you would like to participate in the Cheyenne Bottoms CBC, come out to the KWEC on Monday, December 21 from 8am until 4pm. Chamber Ambassador Corner - Patty Horton
I, Patty Horton, was born (at the Hoisington Lutheran Hospital in those days) and raised in Hoisington. My husband, Don, and I have been married for 42 years.  We have two grown children that reside in Hoisington and three granddaughters.

Being active in many Hoisington and Barton County organizations is gratifying.  One of my goals is to pass on to our granddaughters the importance of being involved in your community.  Someone before our generation did the same thing and it is only right to pay it forward.   It is difficult to get volunteers for projects.  I know that we are all busy, but with the way our world is, we have to work together to get projects done for our community.  Each of us can make a difference.  The biggest bonus of volunteering besides improving our community is the wonderful people you meet and the people you have the privilege of helping, including the future generations.

We always have some small animals for our granddaughters to be around.  They enjoy helping take care of them when time allows.  We like to go to the lake, fish, travel and go to sporting events.  Our family and community is very important to us.  We are so lucky to be located in this area.

My philosophy is to work hard and help others.  You will be rewarded in many ways.
City of Hoisington November Recap
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we are often urged to contemplate the things we have to be thankful for.  This task is not challenging when you are a part of the Hoisington community.  The past year has helped us to realize gains on the business front as well as the housing front.  The City of Hoisington as an organization has been fairly insulated from some of the challenges facing our neighbors (i.e. loss of property values and population).  Our local school district is growing, our hospital is expanding and we have some incredible things to look forward to.  The coming year will bring some long-needed infrastructure enhancements, additional housing and the commencement of the new Lincoln School project.  Hoisington residents and the City's staff have so much to be thankful for.  Hopefully the holiday weekend was safe and enjoyable for our residents along with their family and friends.

During the month of November, the City and its staff stayed busy working on projects to advance our community.  The City closed on the real estate that will help Housing Opportunities Incorporated bring 12 new rental units to Hoisington.  Habitat for Humanity and two different partnerships are hoping to build homes that will help Hoisington to grow and prosper.  A young entrepreneur has recently acquired the former Main Street Welcome Center building downtown and hopes to have it open in the near future.  Things are really hopping on the community development front but don't forget the City is staying focused on infrastructure enhancements while trying to improve the local business environment.  In late November, the City began work with a company to replace the west side lift station with a larger lift station to meet the growing needs of our community in the future.  Looking forward to 2016, the City will likely begin repaving Main Street between Sixth St. and Ninth St. in early 2016.  This will be funded with $600,000 in KDOT funds that will be leveraged with local funds.  The City is also working on a multi-million dollar wastewater treatment lagoon system enhancement that is being mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency.  The City is seeking grant funds to assist with this project but the expenses are going to be significant and will most likely result in an increase in rates at some point in 2016.

During November, the City also met with representatives of the State of Kansas that are working with consultants to try and increase the accuracy of FEMA's flood plain map for the entire workship.  If some of the flood plain areas were eliminated, or, if the flood risk can be mitigated in some way this could enhance our community in many ways.  The City is also working to enhance our community through its code enforcement division.

The City's new code enforcement officer is working diligently to clean up our community.  Dolores Kipper has been working to address nuisance vehicles and blighted properties over the past couple of months.  She has also been very involved with the City's Trap-Neuter-Return program which is a humane method to address community cats and strays.  Hoisington is the first community in Barton County to utilize this humane method for controlling pet population while increasing public safety.  The program involves capturing cats that are running at large without city tags, without rabies vaccinations and that are not spayed or neutered.  These cats are brought in, spayed or neutered and then given their rabies vaccinations.  Once the cats have received this care, they are released back into the community with clipped ears.  If you see a cat with a clipped ear, it most likely indicates the cat has received its rabies vaccination and is spayed or neutered.  If you have a colony of cats in your neighborhood, please do not feed them.  By feeding the stray cat, an individual is assuming ownership of this animal.  Many people have the misconception that feeding strays is a nice and helpful thing to do but the end results can be exactly the opposite of that.  Feeding cats that are not vaccinated or neutered can lead to overpopulation and may pose a risk to public health. Unvaccinated cats can carry diseases and create a public health risk to the community just as numerous other non-domesticated animals might.

Please help us to address the issue of community cats in a humane manner.  This program will save our community money and will help to address the issue of cat overpopulation while enhancing the neighborhoods in our community.  Please contact Dolores Kipper at (620)653-4995 if you would like more information regarding this program.

The City of Hoisington is here to serve you.  Thank you for your contributions to our community and thank you for making Hoisington such an incredible place to live.  The City and its staff hope you and your families had a great Thanksgiving and we are thankful for the opportunity to serve you.

If you have any ideas on how the City can improve our community, please contact Jonathan Mitchell at (620)653-4125 or via email at [email protected]

Kansas April Unemployment Rates/Labor Market report
Labor Market Report October 2015
TOPEKA, Kan. - The state's October seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.1 percent, down from 4.4 percent in September and decreased from 4.2 percent in October 2014.

Seasonally adjusted figures show Kansas gained 13,500 private sector jobs since last year, or 1.2 percent. Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 10,900, or 0.8 percent, since October 2014. Since last month, Kansas gained 2,700 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs, or 0.2 percent. The state gained 2,500 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs since September 2015, or 0.2 pecent.

"The state's unemployment rate continues to improve, falling to 4.1 percent in October," said Kansas Secretary of Labor, Lana Gordon. "This is the lowest rate Kansas has recorded in more than 14 years."

Not seasonally adjusted figures show Kansas gained 13,400 private sector jobs since last year, or 1.2 percent. Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 10,900, a 0.8 percent increase since October 2014. Since September, private sector jobs increased by 8,100, or 0.7 percent. The state gained 13,600 total nonfarm jobs over the month, or 1.0 percent.

"Last month's preliminary estimate of 4,200 jobs added has been revised upward to reflect a gain of 8,000 private sector jobs in September. Preliminary estimates for October show an additional increase of 2,700 jobs, for a two-month gain of more than 10,000 jobs," said Tyler Tenbrink, Senior Labor Economist, Kansas Department of Labor. "This growth is partly due to continued growth in construction jobs and retail trade. October marks the beginning of the retail hiring season as employers gear up for the holidays."

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in October was 3.7 percent, down from 3.8 percent in September and down from 3.9 percent one year ago.

There were 8,652 initial claims for unemployment benefits in October 2015, down from 10,993 in September and down from 11,175 in October 2014. There were 49,616 continued claims in October, down from 57,687 the previous month and down from 66,959 in October 2014.

Data provided is preliminary and subject to monthly revisions and annual benchmarks by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Information on procedures for producing Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) estimates is available on the BLS website here.
