Tee Times still available

Clara Barton Hospital Foundation will be remembering the past and looking to the future with its 22nd Annual Benefit, Friday, June 19, 2015. The Benefit includes a golf tournament, dinner, and silent and live auctions.

The golf tournament will feature a four-man scramble at Lake Barton Golf Course, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. through 12:50 p.m. Cost to enter the tournament is $90 per player, or $360 per team. Registration includes green fees, golf cart rental, lunch on the course, a player gift, and a ticket to the dinner and auction later that evening. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in two flights. Advance registration is encouraged by Monday, June 15.

This year, the Hole-In-One Contest will be a little different for returning golfers - instead of one chance to win a new car; golfers will have FIVE chances to win $1,000, sponsored by Manweiler Chevrolet. Other contests include a chipping contest, longest drive, longest putt, closest to the hole, and straightest shot for both men's and women's divisions, sponsored by First Kansas Bank and Cardinal Pharmacy. Prizes for each flight will be awarded, as well as last place prizes (new this year!).

Anyone interested in registering a golf team for the event should contact the Foundation at 620-653-5012 or [email protected].

KWEC Scavenger Hunt

June is Get Outdoors Month. In celebration, you can get outdoors and win prizes for a free nature photography scavenger hunt sponsored by the Kansas Wetlands Education Center and the Great Bend Recreation Commission.

Have you ever climbed up one of the observation towers at Cheyenne Bottoms? Or have you ever held an earthworm? These and 28 additional items, including plants, animals, places, and outdoor activities from Cheyenne Bottoms and the Great Bend area are included on a scavenger hunt list for you to find and photograph.

Go to http://wetlandscenter.fhsu.edu to download an entry form, rules, and scavenger hunt list. Submit your photos of at least 15 of the items on the list by the June 30th deadline, and you will be entered into a drawing for prizes that will be given away in early July.

This is a great, fun way for families to get outside and complete the scavenger hunt together. Photos must be submitted to the GBRC or KWEC on a CD, flash drive, or printed (4x6). A blank CD will be provided to you if you need one. See rules for details.

More information available at the KWEC, GBRC, or http://wetlandscenter.fhsu.edu.

Hutch Regional Receive Award

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is the recipient of awards from two prestigious national organizations that deal with eye and organ donations.

The Midwest Transplant Network (MTN) has awarded Hutchinson Regional Medical Center the "Excellence in Donation Award" for their outstanding performance in the area of organ and tissue donations during 2014. Also, Saving Sight, one of the largest eye banks in the nation, awarded HRMC the "Excellence in Eye Donation Award" in recognition of the hospital's successful efforts in promoting cornea donation.

The awards were made as part of National Donate Life Month, which was observed in April.

MTN was established in 1975 to promote organ and tissue donations throughout Kansas and western Missouri and, for the past 40 years, has worked closely with HRMC to achieve its goal of assisting patients who wish to donate organs and tissue at the end of life.

According to MTN officials, donations from two organ donors in 2014 resulted in life-saving transplants for five recipients. Also, HRMC successfully completed 12 tissue donations, each of which may have benefited as many as 50 people.

In addition, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) within the Department of Health and Human Services in the nation's capital lauded HRMC for their outstanding record in assisting organ donors.

Rachelle Bryan, RN, Patient Care Services Supervisor, accepted the award on behalf of HRMC at a meeting that was held on May 14 in Westwood, Kansas.

In presenting the Excellence in Eye Donation Award, officials with Saving Sight recognized HRMC for their successful efforts during the past year in assisting 23 patients, who at the end of life, chose to donate their eyes for transplant.

Linda Conyac, Interim Partner Relations Coordinator for Saving Sight, said the cornea donations have made a significant impact in assisting individuals suffering from severe vision loss.

"Thanks to the generosity of eye donors, their families and supportive hospital staff like those at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Saving Sight was able to provide donated eye tissue for 2,985 corneal transplants in 2014, an average of eight per day," Conyac said.

Conyac said interested parties can show their support for donation by signing up for the Kansas Donor Registry online at (www.donatelifekansas.com) or at the local Department of Motor Vehicles office, and then speaking with family and friends about the decision. Kansans can obtain additional information on the Saving Sight and Donate Life websites, or host a donor registration drive in their communities.

Officials with Saving Sight presented the award to officials at HRMC in a ceremony held May 12 at the hospital.

Kevin J. Miller, F.A.C.H.E., President and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, said HRMC has, throughout its history, offered a helping hand to those who wish to donate organs, tissues and eyes.

"The need for organ, tissue and eye donations has never been greater," Miller said. "Nearly 124,000 people in the nation are waiting for an organ transplant, and 150 are added to the list each day."

"Tragically, approximately 21 people in the nation pass on each day because the organs they need are not available," Miller continued. "Still, great strides are being made as nearly 30,000 organ transplants were completed across the nation in 2014 thanks to 14,000 donors. During last year, more than one million tissue transplants were performed along with 48,000 cornea transplants."

Those individuals desiring additional information on organ and tissue donations or wanting to complete the required authorization should log on to the Midwest Transplant Network at www.mwtn.org.

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is an affiliate of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System. Other affiliates are Ray E. Dillon Living Center, Hospice and Homecare of Reno County, Horizons Mental Health Center, Health-E-Quip, and Hutchinson Regional Medical Foundation.

Barton County YP Corner
Leadership Training event coming to Barton County

Sometimes there is nothing more motivating than to see and hear from a local person that has succeeded in their career.

The Barton County Young Professionals Leadership Team has organized a Leadership Training event titled "Paving the Path to Success" for Wednesday, June 17. The three-hour event, sponsored by Marmie Ford, Marmie Motors, is designed to inspire and re-motivate individuals in pursuing their personal and professional goals.

Kari Smith, Executive Vice President of Stores for The Buckle, Inc will share her inspirational story.

"We wanted to find a local professional that has created their own path to success, said Gerrie Meyer, YP Leadership Team member. "We want them to share their insights with the young leaders. Kari has proven herself to be the perfect example we were looking to find."

Smith started as a part-time employee at The Buckle and eventually worked her way up to the Executive Team for a company with over 450 stores in 44 states.

"The presentation on June 17 will mark the third straight year Barton County Young Professionals has held a leadership seminar to inspire our community leaders," Meyer said.

The event will take place from 2-5 p.m. at the Great Bend Chamber Office, 1125 Williams in Great Bend.

Desa Marmie Behr, Sales Manager with Marmie Ford, will also share her perspective on community leadership and how it can impact your professional career.

"I think it is extremely important for everyone to get involved in the community," Meyer added. "In my experience, creating ties and relationships within your community has a positive impact on your career growth."

Cost to attend the event is $20 per person and includes refreshments. Participants will receive a certificate of completion to display at work. Registration is limited to 20 people so be sure to register on the Barton County YP Facebook page.
