Congratulations to all of our talented student artists. I have enjoyed seeing the world through their eyes over the past few weeks. Their imagination and creative expression inspires me.
Bravo to our talented Middle Schoolers! To hear the range of beautiful voices and acting talent at the Middle School musical was delightful. I wondered if we would be able to compete with the various versions of the play, and indeed our students did even better than ever imagined.
I extend best wishes for great success to our students as they take their exams next week. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

Community Service Opportunities this Summer
The Upper School Community Service Club encourages students and families to participate in community service this summer. Following are two suggestions: Cradles to Crayons (C2C) provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive--at home, at school, and at play. They supply needed items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need. Sign up for a 2-hour shift, with friends and family, on the website. C2C recommends selecting 2-3 dates and two weeks advance notice. Join us on Saturday, July 30, in the morning for canoeing on the Charles River for Charles River Watershed Clean Up. Volunteers meet at the Newton Historic Boathouse at 2401 Commonwealth Avenue in Newton and should plan to be at the event for 2-3 hours. See the website for more information. Register by e-mailing Lisa Hastings (Parent & Trustee) at LRHastings@comcast.net.

Winterim 2017
Winterim 2017 is coming! Please see the Winterim Trip Brochure about the trips we are planning to offer and answers to frequently asked questions about the program. Although sign-ups will not take place until the fall, it is important to start planning ahead. Families are encouraged to make sure that passports are up-to-date (with 3-6 months remaining from the date of return to the U.S.) and that you are aware of other necessary travel documents to prepare (e.g., visas for international students, etc.) For U.S. passport information and details about the countries your child is interested in visiting, go to travel.state.gov. Senior Week
The seniors have enjoyed special programming this week that will help them when they all go off to college. Each day the students arrived at 10:30 a.m. to hear an outside speaker(s) address a specific topic relevant to entering college freshman. On Monday, they heard the former VP for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Brandeis University, Rick Sawyer, discuss campus life and how students can navigate their way through problems and general questions while on campus. On Tuesday, Brimmer graduates returned from Brown, Johns Hopkins, Virginia Tech, Colby, Amherst, and Lehigh to share their college experiences and how they navigated their way through freshman year. The next day they heard John Tarbox, Managing Director of Beacon Hill Staffing, and Cassie Abodeely, attorney, and current Brimmer Summer Camp Director, discussing Resume Writing and Interviewing Do's and Don'ts. Thursday's topic was Personal Finances, presented by Shauna Pendleton, Santander Bank and Business Development Office, who instructed the students on the basics of checking accounts, debit and credit cards, identity protection, and money management. The week ended with Technology Information and was presented by Michael Langlois, Brimmer Director of Technology, and Lisa Collins, Executive Director of B Your Brands Communications. Each presentation was followed by a special catered luncheon.
Class of 2017
The junior class had their last College Counseling class of the year this week. During the semester, students completed assignments covering career exploration, did preliminary college searches, attended a college essay workshop presented by an admissions officer from a university, became familiar with Naviance, started their Common Applications, and much more. As they head off for the summer break, all students are expected to have submitted a rough draft or notes for their college essay, asked two teachers to write their college recommendations, and submitted their list of colleges as it currently stands. Parents and guardians will receive a more detailed letter from the College Counseling team with our expectations for the students for the summer. Because most colleges are now encouraging students to submit applications under an early plan (Early Decision, Early Action, Priority Deadline) and because these early submissions may enhance a positive outcome, we are hoping to have the students complete as much of the process as possible before the start of School.
Studying Abroad
Many adults in the Brimmer community have memories of spending asemester or a year studying abroad while in college. In recent years, however, increasing numbers of American students are choosing to spend their entire undergraduate career at an international university. The most popular destinations are in the U.K. and Ireland, and these countries are anxious to have our students. Many universities now have offices and representatives in the U.S., and they visit our schools on a regular basis. They also invite U.S. counselors to visit their campuses. I have just returned from a 10-day trip to Britain, Scotland, and Ireland where I visited 12 universities. This was my third trip to visit international universities -- by invitation. The pluses of choosing this educational path are many, not the least of which is that the total cost is considerably less than comparative private colleges in the U.S. Currently, we have a Brimmer graduate, Oscar Portabales, studying at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. We had a wonderful visit together, and he was happy to share his experiences of a happy first year experience with me. This echoes the feelings of previous Brimmer graduates who have chosen to study abroad. I am eager to share my impressions and knowledge of these universities with members of the Brimmer community. Please contact me if you would like more information.
