Spring is in the air! Last night's Middle and Upper School Spring Concert packed the theater with students and guests, and audience members left with smiles on their faces and a lift in their step. Our students performed one of the best concerts I have seen, and the talent was deep and strong. The support our students show to one another was heart warming to watch and a testament to the outstanding instruction they receive on a daily basis.
As I glance ahead at the calendar, I see that our students' days are packed with athletic contests, creative arts performances, research papers, exhibitions of knowledge, AP tests, thesis defenses, and final cumulative assessments. Our younger students are working just as hard as our older students to complete their work, and everyone is trying to cross the academic finish line with his and her best effort.
This is a good time to pause and remember that rest is important, and our students need to have some unstructured time to decompress. Please help your children make time for rest and relaxation in the midst of the work being asked of them. It is important that we help them handle stress and pressure by using healthy and effective coping strategies when much is being demanded from them.

After School Music Collaborates with Fourth and Fifth Grade

On Friday, April 22 our Fourth and Fifth Grade band students welcomed seven expert musicians from our After School Music Program to observe their morning rehearsal. These visiting artists sat in each section of the band to listen, share celebratory comments, and offer a few helpful suggestions. During this collaborative experience, students rehearsed four pieces for our upcoming performances: Share Assembly on May 6 and our Spring Concert on May 12. Our students enjoyed working with professional musicians in an ensemble setting.

Dear Lower School Families,
The Earth Day Celebration was a big hit. It was a lot of fun to watch the older students working with the children in Lower School. All of us made and decorated piggy banks using paper cups donated by Peet's Coffee & Tea, and we will now start a month-long coin drive! Special thanks go to all the parents and teachers who planned this great event.
There is one week until the Auction, and there are some incredible Lower School items on which you can bid. Go for it!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I have just returned from the NAIS-TABS Global Symposium. I had the honor of presenting with Kelly Neely, Director of Global Studies, about our outstanding PK-12 global education curricula at Brimmer. It was exciting to share the exceptional work that we do with independent school colleagues.
I want to commend May Chorale and Mr. Van Atta for the wonderful concert last night. The students did an excellent job, and it is always a pleasure to see them on stage.
It is hard to believe that the end of the year is quickly approaching! I look forward to seeing all of you at the many end-of-year events.

Spring Testing for Juniors
All juniors MUST take the SAT or the ACT or both this spring. The following test dates remain:
SAT
June 4 (Registration deadline is May 5)
ACT
June 11 (Registration deadline is May 6)
Test Preparation For SAT and ACT preparation, we have partnered with the Summit Educational Group for a number of years. We chose Summit after examining other test prep agencies and concluded that we liked the educational philosophy and financial aid available at Summit. Summit offers two courses a year at Brimmer: one beginning in early January to prepare for the spring testing dates, and another shorter course in the fall that is more of a "refresher" before the fall test dates. Summit also offers one-on-one tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and all academic subjects. Although we have tried to schedule the classes at a time most convenient for students--which has been on Sunday mornings--we realize that time does not work for everyone. We encourage students to utilize free test preparation on websites, especially Kahn Academy, which is now partnered with The College Board. (Students received information about this when they took the PSAT) We also discovered a new program called Testive, a Boston-based online SAT and ACT prep company founded at MIT. They offer 1-1 online coaching programs and free, unlimited access to their software content. According to Testive, their coaching program increases scores by an average of 3-4 points on the ACT, and 150 points on the SAT. Coaches meet with their students weekly via video chat and review the students' work, assign personalized curriculum, and keep them motivated. Brimmer students will receive a 25% discount on any coaching package by using the promo code: bam25! To register for a free Testive account, you must sign up on our school page at schools.testive.com. contact Scott Staiti, Director of School Outreach at scott@testive.com for more information.
BISCCA College Fair
When: Sunday, April 24
Time: 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Where: Milton Academy
Admissions officers from colleges throughout the United States and abroad, (excluding New England) and Gap Year Programs will be represented at this college fair program. BISCCA is open exclusively to students attending Boston area independent schools. Institutions are invited because they are consistently the schools most popular with our students. This is a unique opportunity to meet the admissions officers and learn more about the colleges and universities. This is a required event for juniors. See the list of participating institutions here. An email with the invitation and list of colleges will be sent to parents. Brimmer will be providing a bus to Milton Academy. The bus will depart from the parking lot at 11:45 a.m. and return between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m.. Email either Ms. Du or Mrs. Pendergast if you would like to take the bus.
College Essay Workshop
On Monday, April 25, the juniors will participate in a college essay workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The presenter will be Chris Teare, Senior Associate Director of Admissions at Drew University in New Jersey. Mr. Teare is a veteran educator and college admissions officer who has worked at institutions in both the U.S. and abroad. He is a regular to the online Forbes Magazine and last fall published an article entitled "College Application Essays Must Have The Student's Voice."
Financial Planning for College
Todd Weaver, Senior Director
Mr. Todd Weaver, of Strategies for College, will present on Financial Planning for College at Brimmer on Thursday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m.
The presentation will take place in Chase (room 39).
The price tag for a four-year college education is not diminishing. What are some strategies that can be employed by any family to address impending costs and expenses related to paying for college?
T his presentation focuses on long and short-range planning for your child's college or university education. Parents of students from the Middle School through Upper School are invited.
Colleges That Change Lives Reception at Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel
One of my favorite books to recommend to students and parents is Colleges That Change Lives by Loren Pope. As an outgrowth of the book, the 40 colleges described in it formed an organization that travels across the country to proclaim how their colleges have changed so many lives. Admission directors from the 40 colleges will be in Boston on Saturday, May 14 at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. The program will begin with a 30-minute session on the college search process followed by a college fair when families will have the opportunity to meet with the representatives from the colleges. I encourage you to read the book before you attend the program. This is a not-to-be-missed event.
Inside the Application Process at Boston University
What: Inside the Application Process
Where: Boston University College of General Studies, 871 Commonwealth Ave. Boston, 02215 When: Wednesday, May 18 Registration and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. Presentation at 7:00 p.m.
In a flyer advertising this event, Boston University poses the question about 3 students--"Which student did we accept?" One student had straight As; one student had enrolled in 4 AP classes; one student was a National Merit Scholar. If you are curious to know the answer, the admissions staff at BU will explain how they make their decisions. This program is open to parents and students. Please RSVP to admissions@bu.edu
College News Board
Students should check the College News board in Almy frequently for information about spring open house programs at colleges as well as local information sessions and receptions. New opportunities are posted daily. This is an excellent time for juniors to explore opportunities available to them.
