Creating a learning environment where all students feel included and no one is marginalized was this week's subject at the full faculty and staff meeting. Two trained professionals from YW Boston engaged the Brimmer adults on the subject of microagressions. Microagressions are defined as "a subtle but offensive comment or action directed at a minority or other non-dominant group that is often unintentional and unconsciously reinforces a stereotype."  At the training we discussed comments we hear at School that might make others feel marginalized in some way. We then discussed ways we can adjust how we respond so we can correct the behavior. Our goal is to increase awareness and stop microagressions from happening so members of our community will not be harmed, and all students are empowered to succeed.

Next week the team from YW Boston will return to work with student groups on this subject. Faculty will engage in a conversation with their students to help raise awareness of how microagressions affect others. We will guide our students to be mindful of behaviors that disrupt our goal of being an inclusive community. A special thank you to Jessica Christian, our Director of Diversity, for bringing this professional group to campus.

BISCCA College Fair

When:  Sunday, April 24
Time:  12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Where:  Milton Academy

Admissions officers from colleges throughout the United States and abroad (excluding New England) as well as Gap Year Programs will be represented at this college fair program that is open exclusively to students attending Boston area independent schools. Institutions in attendance are invited by the counselors in BISCCA because they are consistently the schools most popular with our students. This is a unique opportunity for families to meet the admissions officers and learn more about the colleges and universities. This is a required event for juniors. Students have been given the list of participating institutions so that they can do some research in advance of the day and create a plan of which colleges they would most like to meet with.  An email with the invitation and list of colleges will be sent to parents.

College Essay Workshop

On Monday, April 25, the juniors will participate in a college essay workshop from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m.  The presenter will be Chris Teare, Senior Associate Director of Admissions at Drew University in New Jersey.  Mr. Teare is a veteran educator and college admissions officer who has worked at institutions in both the U.S. and abroad. He is a regular to the online Forbes Magazine and last fall published an article entitled "College Application Essays Must Have The Student's Voice."

Financial Planning for College

Todd Weaver, Senior Director

Mr. Todd Weaver, of Strategies for College, will present on Financial Planning for College at Brimmer on Thursday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m.
The presentation will take place in Chase, room 39, which is just off the Dining Room.

The price tag for a four-year college education is not diminishing. What are some strategies that can be employed by any family to address impending costs and expenses related to paying for college?
This presentation focuses on long and short-range planning for your child's college or university education. Parents of students from the Middle School through Upper School are invited.

Inside the Application Process at Boston University

In a flyer advertising this event, BU poses the question about 3 students--"Which student did we accept?" One student had straight As; one student had enrolled in 4 AP classes; one student was a National Merit Scholar. If you are curious to know the answer to this question, the admissions staff at BU will explain how they make decisions on applications. This program is open to parents and students. They would like students who plan to attend to RSVP to admissions@bu.edu

What: Inside the Application Process
Where: Boston University College of General Studies, 871 Commonwealth Ave. Boston, 02215
When: Wednesday, May 18
Time: Registration and refreshments at 6:30. Presentation at 7 p.m.

2016 College Acceptances

We congratulate our seniors on their successes and for the thoughtful way they approached the college process.

When reading the list of college acceptances for the Class of 2016 you will see that this year the list reflects more state universities, especially our own state universities. As families grapple with the reality of tuition at some private colleges and universities that are nearing $70,000, they are considering more affordable options. These options also include substantial merit scholarships that many private colleges give worthy students. Some of these colleges many not be as familiar to families in New England, but they are outstanding institutions known to educators. You will see the names of some of these colleges on the list, and our students have been awarded very sizable merit scholarships at some of them.

I always encourage families to read the book by Loren Pope, Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think About Colleges. I have just purchased two new copies of the book and invite families to borrow a copy. In addition to financial considerations, our seniors are making decisions based on other considerations such as specific career preparation programs and athletic programs. We are happy that they are realizing that rankings drawn up by magazines with questionable methodology do not mean they are necessarily appropriate matches. We congratulate our seniors on their successes and for the thoughtful way they approached the college process.

Congratulations to the Class of 2016 on their college acceptances!
