Doublespeak, Big Brother, Thoughtcrime, Oceania--these words are from the fictional world of George Orwell's 1984. I had the pleasure of attending the A.R.T.'s production of Orwell's dystopian society with our Upper School students who are enrolled in our Creative Arts Diploma Program, Global Studies Diploma Program, and the International Relations course. The current debate about privacy and surveillance today made the Orwellian world imagined in the 1940s relevant to our students. Our students engaged in both the question of privacy and the influence government has in our lives.
As Brimmer expands our STEAM program and curriculum, it is also important to highlight the importance of the humanities. The advances we make as a society require us to think critically about the essence of our humanity and what role we play in building a successful and ethical society. Orwell certainly gives us reason to pause and reflect.

Maternity Leave News
We are excited to welcome back Mrs. Shannon from her maternity leave. She will return to Brimmer on March 7th and will co-teach with her substitute teachers throughout the week. I wish to thank Mrs. Pan and Mrs. Balles for teaching our students during Mrs. Shannon's leave. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Shannon back!
Mrs. Nyland will be having her baby soon, and we all wish her well as she departs for her leave within the next week or so. We are delighted to have our athletic trainer, Larry Stahley, assume her responsibilities. Mr. Stahley has a B.S. in Athletic Training from Northeastern University and a M.S. in Exercise and Health Sciences from UMass Boston. His background on nutrition, physical activity, and health will serve our students well in Ms. Nyland's absence. Please welcome Mr. Stahley as our full-time Assistant Athletic Director for the remainder of the spring season.

Tickets for the Upper School Musical, In The Heights, are on sale now!
In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York's Washington Heights neighborhood -- a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It's a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you and which ones you leave behind. In the Heights is the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations.
Run Time: Approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes.
March 3 and 4 at 7:00 p.m.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Community service is a key part of the student experience in the Middle School. I wanted to share a few of the community service projects that are currently underway at Brimmer.
- Friday, March 11, will be a day of service in the Middle School. Students in grade 6 will work at Cradles to Crayons in Brighton while students in grade 8 will collect and wrap the items we have collected for Birthday Wishes. This work will directly benefit young people in our local community.
- There was a "dress-down" day today sponsored by the Peer Leaders. Students in the group chose two charities they wanted to support this year. Both The Jimmy Fund and the Alzheimer's Association have special meaning for students in the group, and they will be hosting several other events through out the spring.
- Students in grade 8, as part of their Life Skills class, are asked to complete eight hours of community service outside of School and to reflect on that time. The students will present their experiences and reflections in an Exhibition that will be held in May.
I love being a part of a community that gives back, and I look forward to sharing more of these experiences with you throughout this spring.
Sincerely,
Carl Rapisarda-Vallely

Spring College Visits
March Break is a perfect time for juniors to visit colleges. Nearly all colleges and universities offer campus tours and group information sessions several times each day. This information can be found on their websites, and most will allow families to sign up and reserve a spot online. If you would like help in creating a list of appropriate colleges to visit or would like aid in planning the actual trip, the college team would be happy to help you with this. Email Mrs. Pendergast, Ms. Du, or Mr. Murphy to make an appointment. In addition, be sure to check the College Board in Almy for notices of Spring Open House and Visiting Day programs this Spring. This is a wonderful way to explore a college you know little about.
