Our student writers inspire me. Several of our Lower School children are enjoying an afternoon club for those interesting in writing even after a full day of academic work. Our Middle Schoolers are learning to be researchers and writers throughout the curriculum and are learning to discern what expository approach is needed for the different subjects they are learning. Our Upper School students just released fresh content on the student news site, The Gator. This is in addition to their daily writing exercises that include several analytical essays and a focused effort to develop their own voice.

In addition to the traditional modes of written expression, helping our student learn how to leave a positive digital footprint continues to be a focus at Brimmer. Teacher David Cutler just released an article about this subject on Edutopia, a national education resource for classroom instruction. In his article he writes: "Plenty of students may know how to create digital media, but too few know how to produce engaging, high-quality content, the kind that makes them stand out not only to college admission officers, but also to potential employers." Mr. Cutler continues on to explain how teachers must help students learn about the effective use of social media.

I encourage you to read his article and have a conversation with your child if he or she is old enough to be part of the various social networks. Being responsible about our "footprint" in life helps us be mindful of and accountable for what we say and do.

Sincerely,

Judith Guild
Head of School

News from Lower School
Dear Lower School Families,

We want to thank the families who have volunteered to join the classroom teachers this Sunday for the Open House. Your efforts and the fact you are giving us time on a weekend are greatly appreciated. All of us are looking forward to Harvest Fest on Friday, October 30; this is another time when we need to say thank you for your efforts and time!

A few nuts and bolts:
  • If you show up late for your child's dismissal, please park in the gym lot or on Dunster Road (by the tennis courts) and go to the foyer of McCoy Hall (#69); your child will be waiting for you there.
  • A reminder: To keep dismissal running smoothly, please do not arrive more than ten minutes ahead of your dismissal time and keep your place in line; also please, do not park on Devon if you plan to walk up to get your child. For those who have younger children who need help buckling up, we will load your child into the car, and we would like you to pull down past the playground gates before getting out of your car to assist with buckling the seat belt.
  • Please label your child's coats and sweaters. These are items that tend to be left behind, and if they are labeled, there is a far better chance of getting them back to their owners.

Because of our close proximity to BC, we get a number of requests from college students to do research in our classrooms. Any of our students who take part must have a consent form signed by a parent/guardian. All information that is gathered is confidential. We like to help BC if we can, so please consider signing a consent form if you get one.

Ms. McGillicuddy will collect unopened surplus Halloween candy in her office on Monday, November 2. She will send it to Operation Gratitude, which sends candy to our troops serving overseas--toothbrushes are welcome, too! More on this later...

Grade Five Parents
: I will host a light breakfast meeting in the Lower School library on Friday, November 6. Dr. Meister will speak about and answer question regarding social curriculum, and Ms. Rudolph will speak about the World Language Program.

Finally, if you do not get a response to an email in a timely manner, please leave a voice mail message. Our spam filter is very aggressive
in order to protect our students who have accounts. We all check the spam filter on our accounts, but it is easy to overlook a good email due to the significant amount of spam we receive. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,
Thomas A. Fuller
