As the weather is turning colder, it prompts us all to be prepared for the winter. Certainly last winter still lingers in our memories. Brimmer Trustee Jim Orr attended a lecture at Woods Hole last week, and the scientists presented their prediction that our winter should be warmer and wetter than usual due to strong El Niņo weather patterns. Let's hope they are right and that we are above the freezing mark when wet weather hits the Boston area. For the skiers, I wish for great snow in the mountains!

While I hope we will not have to use our emergency system for any serious reason, we do have it readily available and use it for weather-related school cancellations. Next week I will be sending out a test of our emergency system. If you do not receive a message or if you receive the message to a number or email you no longer wish for us to use, you will need to contact either Virginia Beech (Pre-K-5) or Mary Gates (6-12). We have changed the system this year, so for those who are used to seeing "Alertnow," you will see the sender as "Blackboard Connect." You will not be able to reply to the sender.

I hope to see many of you at Homecoming tomorrow at the Orr Field. I apologize for any confusion my letter of last week may have caused. Open House will be on Sunday, Oct. 25th, so please continue to spread the good word about our School.

Sincerely,

Judith Guild

Maternity Substitute Plans for Bethany Shannon
We are excited for Ms. Shannon as she awaits the upcoming birth of her first child. She plans to be with us through the middle of November and return after March break.

Three of our own Brimmer teachers have agreed to teach extra classes to cover her maternity leave. Mrs. Balles will teach Ms. Shannon's two Upper School physics classes and one section of the seventh grade. Mrs. Pan, the Science department chair, will teach the other section of seventh grade. Mrs. Lee, our Middle and Upper School art teacher, will complete the semester of CAD, an elective course in the Upper School.

Mrs. Balles has been with us part-time for the past three years, teaching the Introduction to Engineering course in our Upper School. She received her B.S. in Ocean Engineering from MIT and subsequently worked as a manufacturing engineer at GE Aircraft Engines before raising her children. She is also a certified Master Gardener.
