Next weekend we have two important events. Our annual Homecoming event is Saturday, October 17. I hope you will stop by to cheer on our Girls' and Boys' Varsity Soccer teams. Our student athletes are working very hard this fall, and they always appreciate support from the sidelines. We will serve a BBQ lunch, have giveaways for everyone who attends, and have the chance to enjoy time with friends. Then on Sunday, October 19, we will host our Open House for prospective families. Please spread the word about Brimmer and encourage your friends to attend so they can learn about our program. This day would not be possible without our many volunteers, and I wish to thank everyone involved in advance for committing a significant portion of their Sunday to this event. Expect a lot of excitement on campus next Friday as we prepare for these two events by having a school-wide Spirit Day. Pull out the green and white and help our students come to School ready to raise the spirit for Homecoming! I hope to see you there next Saturday.
Sincerely,
Judith Guild

State of the Arts

Lower School
After-school Music lessons and grade 4 & 5 Band both start up next week!
Middle School
Students enjoyed two guests last week: a visit from the Chinese acrobat Li Liu who performed for the Middle School and another from CJ Pawlikowski, an actor appearing with the national tour of Book of Mormon who spoke about his performing career and performed for the students.
The 6th grade is immersed in a Dragon Project in their visual arts classes.
7th graders have begun looking at communicating ideas with silence, stillness, sound, and movement in drama classes. In music, 7th graders are adding instrumentation to their performance of Sakura, which they are singing in Japanese.
8th graders wrote their first monologues in drama classes and are drawing elephants from observation in visual art classes. (Ask them how they are managing that.)
Upper School
In Advanced Theater Studies students have finished working on their Shakespeare soliloquies and are starting to work on a group piece from Matilda.
In Printmaking, students are starting monoprints using landscape as a subject. It's a messy process, but great work.
In Greenline, students were given a Master Class by CJ Pawlikowski, an actor appearing with the national tour of Book of Mormon, who spoke about his performing career and performed for the students.
On Wednesday, students in Greenline and CAP attended The Book of Mormon and received a backstage tour of the theatre.
In AP Visual Art and AP Photo students are starting to plan their concentration for their portfolio.

From the Middle School
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last Friday's Middle School Dance was a huge success. We had almost 200 students in attendance. The money raised from this event will help our Senate realize many of their plans for the year.
I will be hosting a series of grade-level meetings for parents in the Wright Conference Room. Coffee and tea, orange juice, and a light breakfast will be served. I hope you can join me!

CWRA+ Testing Schedule for Grade 8
The School will administer the College Work and Readiness Assessment (CWRA+) to members of the 8th grade during the month of October. Click here to find the pdf of the CWRA+ Student Guide. The Schedule of testing for Grade 8 is presented below (and is determined by class sections):

Pappas Lab Students in Algebra I-1
Wednesday, October 21, 8:00 - 9:45 a.m.

Pappas Lab Students in Science 8-3
We take the safety and well-being of our students very seriously at Brimmer. Our location outside of Boston and on the T is wonderful, but it also can present challenges. For that reason, I want to clarify our policy regarding students leaving campus. Middle School students are not permitted to leave our campus at any time without the written permission of their parents. At all times, students must be released to an adult and are not allowed to walk over to The Street at Chestnut Hill or any other place. The only exception is students who take the T to and from School. They are expected to leave campus and go directly to the T. The construction on Hammond Street makes the area dangerous. We will revisit this policy for eighth graders this spring if the construction is complete. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Please remember there is no school on Monday in observance of Columbus Day. I hope you all enjoy the long weekend, and I look forward to seeing you all back on campus on Tuesday!

Alumni Office Lunch for Members of the Class of 2016
Brimmer and May's Alumni Office sponsored its annual Luncheon featuring Chinese food for the senior class on Friday, October 9, in the Student Lounge during the Upper School lunch period. This annual event is the first in a series culminating in Graduation, which honor the members of the senior class. This luncheon offers a time for the seniors to share a good meal and to begin to plan fundraising events and goals for their senior class gift.
National Merit Scholarship Commended Student
Mia Kundert '16 has been named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for her achievement on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) last fall.
The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT®)--a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year--and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.
In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states.
Harvard Prize Book Award Breakfast

On Wednesday, October 7, Sean Lee, '16, accompanied by Mr. Iuliano, attended the twenty-fourth annual Prize Book Award Breakfast sponsored by the Harvard Club of Boston. Sean was the recipient of the Harvard Book Prize at Brimmer and May's Honors Convocation last June. The Harvard Prize Book is awarded to the outstanding student in the junior class who displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields. It is offered annually to 1,900 schools around the world. Sean is a member of Brimmer and May's Scholar Society, having earned high honors during each of his first three years in the Upper School, and he is a member of the STEAM diploma program. In addition, he plays Varsity Soccer and Lacrosse and has served as a Class Representative, Secretary, and Vice President of the Upper School Senate. In addition, he has been a Student Assistant at the New International Student Orientation for the past three years.

College Counseling Office
Ninth Grade Peak at College
On Tuesday, Mrs. Pendergast and Mr. Murray met with the ninth grade class to acquaint them with the idea of college. The purpose of this meeting was to foster "unanxious expectation" as they begin to absorb the importance of the decisions they are making now and how these decisions will affect their college choices. They learned why it is important to become involved in school and community activities, and they were shown a Common Application so that they could see how this information would be recorded. A real transcript was also shown to educate students about the importance of grades from all years of Upper School, and they learned how GPAs are calculated. We hope this brief introduction will help students understand the college process better and therefore lessen some of the anxiety it tends to cause. Mrs. Pendergast invited the students to stop by her office at any time to discuss their thoughts about college and ask any questions that may arise.
PSAT
On Tuesday, all students in grades 10 and 11 gathered in the theatre for a 45-minute presentation and Powerpoint on the new PSAT. The presenter was Sherry Brass from Kaplan. Students should now have a solid understanding of both the format and the content of this newly designed PSAT that they will be taking next Wednesday, October 14. At Morning Meeting, the students were again urged to read the College Board information packet they all received in early September and take the practice exam found in the packet. For students in grade 11, the scores earned on the PSAT will determine whether they will qualify to enter the competition for a National Merit Scholarship. During Morning Meeting, senior Mia Kundert was honored for being named a National Merit semi-finalist based on her performance last year on the PSAT. Congratulations, Mia!
College Night
Next Wednesday, October 14, is Brimmer and May College Night. This event is open to the entire Brimmer community as it will include general information about the college process and financial aid as well as specific information about the colleges represented on the panel. The panel will include admissions officers from the following institutions:
Boston University
Christina Coviello, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions
Colby College
Elreo Campbell, Associate Dean and Director of Financial Aid
Penn State University
Ryan J. Service, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions
We are pleased to welcome this knowledgeable and seasoned group of admissions professionals to our School. We hope many of you will join us to learn more about current topics in college admissions and financing college education. Note that this is a required event for the Class of 2017.
Financial Aid Night
A College Planning and Financial Aid Seminar will be held at the Noble and Greenough School on Monday, October 19, at 7 p.m. All families from the BISCCA schools (Boston Independent College Counselors Association) are invited and urged to attend. The program will be offered by the Massachusetts Education Financing Authority (MEFA), which is a very important resource for information regarding financing a college education. The program will be held in the Lawrence Auditorium at Nobles at 10 Campus Drive, Dedham. For further information contact Kimya Charles at kimyacharles@nobles.edu or 781-320-7104.
