This year we decided to publish the All-School Family/Student Directory without the Handbook in our effort to reduce costs and save trees and to be more nimble when Handbook changes occur.  Please be sure to review the School's rules and guidelines with your child, so our School will have a positive learning environment.

The Handbook also outlines ways for us to communicate effectively with one another. Our goal is to be in partnership with families and to work together in the child's best interest. For those new to the School, please note we have a robust spam filter so at times parents' correspondences do not get through until our filter recognizes your email address. If you do not hear back within a reasonable amount of time, please call Virginia Beach or Mary Gates, and they will let the teacher know you would like to be contacted.

Being a parent volunteer is another great way to connect and support your child's School. I wish to give a special thank you in advance to all of our amazing parent volunteers. The lead parent volunteers, Roslyn Pedlar and Victor Bellemare, will host our first P.A. meeting of the year next week on Thursday in the Wright Conference room. Those who attend will be able to find out ways to get involved at Brimmer. For those who cannot attend, there are many ways to get in touch with our P.A. Please read to the end of this Bulletin to find out how.

The home-school partnership is one of many reasons Brimmer is such a supportive and engaging place to learn. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read through our comprehensive Handbook

Sincerely,

Judith Guild
Head of School

Middle School NewsMS
From the Middle School

The cool mornings this week were a sign that fall is here! It was wonderful seeing you all at Back-to-School Night. I hope you enjoyed learning more about what your students will be exploring in their classes this year.

As many of you know, the Core Values of the Middle School are honesty, respect, responsibility, and kindness. In an effort to highlight these values in a positive way, we have brought back the Commendation Awards in the Middle School. Similar to the Gators in the Lower School, faculty can give a Commendation to a student they observe exemplifying the Core Values. These students are recognized at our morning meeting on Fridays.

Friday, October 2, is the first dance of the year! This event is open to all students in grades 7 and 8, and we have invited several other local independent schools as well. The cost is $5. Kyla Graves, the grade 8 Class Dean, will oversee the dances this year, so you can contact her with any questions.

Judicial Board Mission and Judicial Board Elections
The Brimmer Judicial Board, comprised of students and faculty members, is committed to strengthening our community by developing and maintaining a tone of decency and sense of responsibility in our daily interactions. We seek to promote honesty, ethical behavior, equity, and equality within our community. We encourage all community members to take individual responsibility for their actions and to be productive and contributing members of our School. The Judicial Board strives to represent community members' interests by exercising the responsibility to be impartial, to uphold the rules of the School, to maintain confidentiality, and to respect an individual's right to a fair disciplinary process. Our objective is to support students when they make mistakes and to work with them to make meaningful learning experiences of such situations. The authority of the Judicial Board is to make recommendations for disciplinary action to the Head of School who reserves the right to accept, reject, or modify those recommendations. A Judicial Board is convened when a student's behavior involves serious violation of the Rules of Conduct.

Eight students and four faculty members gave speeches for election to this year's Judicial Board this past Wednesday during our Activities and Clubs period. Those giving speeches included students in grades 10 -12:

The PSAT
On Wednesday, October 14, all students in grades 10 and 11 will take the PSAT. Please remind your child to carefully read the information booklet they were given about the exam to familiarize themselves with the format and content of the test. The booklet also contains a full practice exam that each student should take. In addition, we will be holding an informational program and Power Point for the students to introduce them to the new PSAT. The program will be presented at school during the week prior to the PSAT. More details about this program will be in the Bulletin next week.

College Night: October 15
College Night is Thursday, October 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the theatre. There will be a panel presentation by three admissions officers followed by a question and answer period. Although the program is especially important for juniors and seniors and their parents, it is actually a wonderful opportunity for all members of the Upper School community to begin to understand the college process. This year's panelists are from Boston University, Colby College, and Penn State University. Topics covered will be specifics about each institution, general information about the college application and review process, and financial aid. All are welcome!
