This past summer, one of the faculty's summer reading choices was
Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning by Brown and McDaniel. Faculty member David Cutler interviewed Mark A. McDaniel last month to discuss his book and share some of his own thoughts. Mr. Cutler writes for several education journals, and this most recent interview was published in Edutopia, a popular online publication about effective teaching tools. Both the book and Mr. Cutler's article reinforced many of the learning principles used at Brimmer.

Helping students see assessments as learning tools is often a challenging goal, especially in the Upper School grades when "everything counts." Nevertheless, giving frequent and small assessments or quizzes is an effective classroom tool when learning new material. Likewise, so is talking with a peer or an adult about a new subject. It is well established that when we explain what we know, it helps the information to be stored in our long-term memory.

I encourage parents to learn what the current topic is in each class your child is taking. Look at the syllabus, the teacher website/ebackpack page,  the classroom packets given to you at our Back-to-School nights and make it a practice to encourage your child to talk about what he or she learned on the subject thus far. Research clearly indicates this will help with the learning process.

Sincerely,

Judith Guild
Head of School

State of the Arts
The Creative Arts Department invites the Brimmer community to follow us online!

The Upper School has begun rehearsals for the fall production of The Universal Language & Other Comedies by David Ives. These contemporary and challenging theatre pieces will showcase the talents of 23 Upper School students. Performances will be held November 11-14.

On October 6, members of Greenline and the Creative Arts Diploma Program will host actor, C.J. Pawlickowski, a member of the ensemble currently touring with The Book of Mormon. Mr. Pawlickowski will hold a master class for the students, and the following evening our students will travel to the Colonial Theatre to see the acclaimed production and get a backstage tour.

Students in AP Visual Art & Photo are preparing to enter the 3rd Annual Teen Portrait competition sponsored by the National Portrait Gallery.

In the Middle School, students have launched into the opening week of our Global Connections Unit, Asia: Beyond the Silk Road, A Mindful Exploration of Culture. The students were introduced to the concept of mindfulness and practiced yoga onstage with Mrs. Gleason. In addition, we shared the story Sadako and the Paper Cranes, and Mr. Ridge patiently taught everyone how to fold paper cranes. We are hoping to complete 1,000 paper cranes by the end of the semester!

The Lower School welcomed the Solar Winds Brass Quintet to last week's Share Assembly. Members of that ensemble introduced their instruments to the children with the hope that it would inspire them to sign up for Lower School Band.

After School music classes are currently enrolling students. Registration is open ONLINE this year at Ultracamp (families who have registered for after school clubs or summer programs at Brimmer can use their already established Ultracamp account for music registration).

Lessons begin October 13 and run through late April 2016. Extended Day is available for Lower School students, and financial aid is available for students who receive aid from the School.

News from Lower School

Dear Lower School Families,

Today was a very exciting day for your children. They were placed in their Buddy Groups at Share. Students in Grades 3 - 5 are the older Buddies for students in Pre-K - Grade 2; Lower School teachers have Buddy Groups of eight to ten students. We will get into Buddy Groups for most of our Share assemblies, and of course we always enjoy our Buddy Apple-Picking Trip!

Speaking of the apple trip--remember to send in the field trip permission form; your child will not be able to go to the orchard without it on file. Please click here to read the attached information about apple trip.

It was wonderful seeing so many of you here last evening for Back-to-School Night. Now, the year is certainly under way!

From the Middle School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

One of the best things about being Head of Middle School at Brimmer is being able to observe our faculty and see, firsthand, the incredible instruction and learning that happens every day. Last week, I observed students in 7th grade discussing the components of culture in connection with their summer reading and 6th graders multiplying two and three digit numbers. I also witnessed the entire Middle School making paper cranes after learning about Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes as part of their introduction to the Global Connections unit on Asia. I will be sharing more classroom happenings through out the year in the Bulletin.

Academic Warning Information
Academic Warnings are short progress reports issued to students who experience academic difficulty and/or have grades of C- or below after the first four weeks of each marking period. (On the calendar Academic Warnings are issued in early October, early December, mid-February, and late April/early May annually). These report unofficial grades that do not appear on report cards or transcripts; Academic Warnings are communications provided by the School to students and families. If a student receives an Academic Warning at any time during the school year, particular attention should be paid to any recommendations for improvement that are contained within it.

Due to the nature of this year's calendar, including several holidays in the month of September, teachers' summative assessments of their students' progress may be limited in quantity and variety; therefore, faculty may have some difficulty in determining the need for issuing Academic Warnings in early October. Students and their families should be certain to maintain an ongoing awareness of academic progress and achievement during the first eight weeks of the school year and check in with advisors as needed.

College Night: October 15

College Night is Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the theatre. There will be a panel presentation by three admissions officers followed by a question and answer period. Although the program is especially important for juniors and seniors and their parents, it is actually a wonderful opportunity for all members of the Upper School community to begin to understand the college process. The panelists this year are from the following institutions: Boston University, Colby College, and Penn State University. Topics covered will be specifics about each institution, general information about the college application and review process, and financial aid. All are welcome!

College Visitors to Brimmer and May

Currently, we have 55 colleges scheduled to visit us this fall; most of them will be coming in September and October. These visits are posted on Naviance, and we urge parents of seniors to check this list frequently and encourage your student to attend college meetings that may hold interest for them. As the students well know, this is a good opportunity to "show interest," which is now so important in the review process as colleges attempt to determine the level of interest the student may have for their institution. Please refer to Naviance or your student to keep you informed. The schedule for next week (so far) is as follows:

         Monday, 9/21
                  Kenyon College @ 1:30 p.m.

         Tuesday, 9/22
                  U Mass/Amherst @ 10:00 a.m.
                  Syracuse University @ 11:15 a.m.
                  Wheaton College @ 1:45 p.m.

         Thursday, 9/24
                  Endicott College @ 1:30 p.m.
                  Simmons College @ 2:00 p.m.

          Friday, 9/25
                  Emmanuel College @ 8:30 a.m.
                  Babson College @ 9:30 a.m.
                  Fairfield University @ 12:00 p.m.
                  The College of Wooster @ 1:00 p.m.

Senior Update

All seniors are now in a weekly College Counseling class. We are working on completing the Common Application and writing/finalizing the essay for the Common Application. Students understand the importance of submitting their applications to colleges in a timely fashion. In addition to Early Action and Early Decision deadlines, which are usually around November 1, many state universities have priority deadlines that can be a early as Oct. 15 or Nov. 1. It is the responsibility of the student to know the deadlines, which are available on the individual college's web site, as well as on the Dashboard on the Common Application of the student.

All recommendations and the transcript are sent to colleges by the Brimmer College Office. The student is responsible for sending his/her application, the application fee (or fee waiver), and the official score report from either College Board or ACT. The College Office does not send test scores.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to call or meet with the primary counselor of their student at any time to discuss the progress of their student.
