As we enter into the final weeks of the School year, I would like to thank our 100+ parent and guardian volunteers for making this school year such a successful one for our students. According to research cited in Surpassing Shanghai, "A nation is not likely to have a first-rate education system unless it believes that its children and its education system are keys to its future." A positive home-school partnership is one reason our students achieve at Brimmer. Our community's commitment to providing our students with opportunities for high levels of instruction, inspiring programs, and well-organized events are made possible often because of our many parent volunteers.

I would like especially to thank the PA Co-Chairs Rosalyn Pedlar and Lynn Segal for their amazing leadership. As you may know, Lynn and her family are moving to North Carolina in June. We are fortunate to have Victor Bellemare, father of Dylan in grade three, join Rosalyn as next year's PA co-chair. It has been a pleasure for me to work with such fine leaders, and I will miss Lynn and her family very much.

I hope you will reach out to the PA team and offer your time as I am sure they will need your help next year. Thank you to all our volunteers for making this year successful. The home-school partnership serves our students well and will help empower them to find success.

Sincerely,

Annual Fund Update

We have surpassed our fundraising goal of $650,000 and continue to raise funds, but it is absolutely vital to the success of the Annual Fund that everyone participates.

We hope that if you have not already done so, you will take the time to make a donation to the 2014-2015 Annual Fund. Currently, we only have 60% parent participation. With your help we can achieve 100% parent participation in our Annual Fund. While we gladly accept the most generous contribution you can reasonably afford, having everyone make a contribution is critical at this time, and we would greatly appreciate whatever level of donation you are able to make.

Thanks so much.

Food Drive

The 8th grade is sponsoring a food drive beginning May 20 as part of a project focusing on poverty in the Boston area. Students created family budgets in their humanities classes based on assigned economic scenarios, which helped them to better comprehend income disparities and the impact of poverty on fellow Bostonians. They then crafted awareness posters in art class. The Food Drive is the culmination of their efforts to fulfill the Global 20/20 challenge from NAIS. Boxes for donations will be in the Dining Hall during the Cinderella performances.  Please support the 8th graders and our greater Boston community by coming to the show and donating.

News from Lower School

Dear Lower School Families,

It was great to hear the choruses and bands perform last night before a SRO audience, and I know some of you were here for the second performance at Share! This Thursday, May 21, please make sure that you take your children to the All School Celebration of the Arts, which begins right after school. The artwork is always spectacular, and the craft projects are great fun; plan to stay and see the Middle School musical, Cinderella.

First-grade families are in for a treat on Tuesday, May 19, from 8:30-9:30 a.m.--it's time for the annual Crepe Party!

Starting on Monday, the fourth and fifth grade students will be taking the ERBs. The best way that you can help your child be prepared for the tests is to make sure he/she gets a good night's sleep and he/she has a good breakfast. Oh--make sure you get to School on time!!

Important reminder for fourth grade parents: Please make sure your children bring fully charged iPads to School each day.

Best wishes,

Spring Concert

On Thursday evening we galloped across the plains to celebrate an evening of amazing music under Western skies. During their annual Spring Concert, students in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 displayed their musicianship with flair. Both choruses and bands delighted audiences with traditional favorites such as Home on the Range, I Got Spurs, and Texas Train. Pieces representing Native Americans, cowboys, and early settlers left us wishing for another opportunity to saddle up and ride the range. On Friday morning during Share Assembly both choruses performed the same repertoire for their little Buddies. Hats off to this hard-working, fun-loving group of young musicians!

Junior-Senior Prom - Saturday, May 16

Junior-Senior Pre-Prom Gathering, 5:30 p.m., Brimmer and May

Junior-Senior Prom, 7:00 p.m., Newton-Marriott Hotel

In order to make this year's prom a safe, fun, and memorable evening Brimmer and May has organized the following activities and made the following arrangements:

Pre-Prom Party at 81 Middlesex Rd. (Head of School's House) with professional photographer, David Barron. This event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome! David will be posing the students in pairs, in friendship groups, and randomly. Parents, family, and friends are welcome and should be sure to bring their own cameras too.

Present the 2015 Junior-Senior Prom at the Newton Marriott at 2345 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton. The Prom begins at 7:00 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres followed by dinner and dessert. Dinner will be the "Night to Remember Buffet " with an unlimited soda bar and a make-your-own-sundae bar. Following dinner there will be dancing until 11:00 p.m. Faculty and administrators will be chaperoning, and a special Photo Booth (free of charge) will be part of the entertainment.

The School will provide a school bus to transport students from the School to the Newton-Marriott. The bus will leave at 6:30 p.m. and will run a return to trip to the School at the end of the Prom.

So that the prom can be fun for all those attending, we ask that students remain at the prom until 10:30 p.m. Once students begin to leave, the party is less exciting for those who stay. We hope the students will respect this community value well.

We look forward to seeing our students at the pre-prom party!

College Counseling

College Destinations for the Class of 2015

We are very proud of our seniors. They applied to some of the most selective institutions in the country, and nearly half of them will attend colleges that rank in the top category of selectivity according to Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Over half of the class will be leaving New England to attend college traveling as far west as California and as far south as Florida. Several will brave the cold in Minnesota and Michigan, and six will enjoy the sun in the South. This was a particularly tough year in college admissions with most institutions seeing an increase in applications. Our seniors did their research, prepared thoughtful applications, spent time perfecting their essays, and indicated their interest to the admissions officers at the colleges. We wish them luck as they begin this new chapter in their lives.

Senior will be attending the following colleges:

Bates College
