Our faculty and staff look forward to the day of appreciation each year. I join our families in the celebration of those who work hard to support and care for our students every day. It is a privilege to be the leader of such a dedicated group of people committed to the growth and development of young people. They take the time to learn about our students' interests, passions, strengths, weaknesses, dislikes, and concerns. They work hard to fulfill the School's mission to inspire our students to be life-long learners and to develop informed, engaged, and ethical citizens and leaders for the global community. In the words of poet William Butler Yeats, Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

I wish to thank the many volunteers for their hard work and personal effort to make today special. This day turned what may be the coldest day of the year into one of the warmest inside the Chase Building.

Sincerely,

Judy Guild

Lower School News
News from Lower School

Dear Lower School Families,

The weather certainly has been--shall we say--snowy. Teachers are working hard to keep their classes caught up, and even though it is not our policy to assign weekend homework, some teachers may send work home over the weekend. If we have more snow days, students in grades 4 and 5 should check their email for work.

Parent conferences will be held on Wednesday, February 25. Please call Ms. Beech beginning this Monday, February 9, to set a time to meet. There will be no School for students on the 25th, but there will be Extended Day for those students already enrolled from 8:00 to 5:30.

Please help us with dismissal now that snow has become a significant factor--along with the multitude of contractors' trucks on Devon. In order to keep our dismissal running efficiently and safely please remember to do the following:

  • For all families: If you walk up to meet your child, please park in the gym lot or on Dunster Road and do not park on Devon Road or Norfolk Road.
  • For families in Grades 1-3: Cars should pull all the way down Devon Road (to the stop sign).
  • For families in Grades 4 & 5: Please do not line up on Devon Road before 3:00 p.m. We may ask you to go around the block if you come before we finish loading grades 1-3
  • We appreciate your help with keeping dismissal running smoothly.

Speaking of appreciation-all of us want to thank you for the wonderful Staff Appreciation Luncheon! We look forward to it every year.

Best wishes,

Distance Learning in Case of Additional Snow Days

Teachers are working hard to make up for the lost time due to recent snow days. If we have more snow days, students should make sure to check eBackpack for additional assignments. Please ensure that your child has his/her iPad at home as it is possible that we will ask the students to do some distance learning if, in fact, we end up missing more School. This would include teachers posting handouts on eBackpack or providing students a link in which they could do some online work.

College Counseling

Last Thursday members of the Class of 2016 and their parents and guardians were introduced to the college process at the Junior College Night. All in attendance received a Brimmer and May College Guide and login information for Naviance, the online tool we use in the process. A Power Point presentation introduced the audience to all that Naviance can offer as well as instruction on how to use this tool. Students will spend this semester working on specific tasks on Naviance such as personality types, career exploration, resume building, and college exploration. All juniors meet once a week in a college counseling class. There are three sections of the class to ensure a small group setting. Parents and guardians are encouraged to schedule meetings with one of the college counselors as soon as possible.

Breakfast for 9th and 10th Grade Parents

An informal discussion about college counseling at Brimmer and May will be held on Thursday, February 12, at 8 a.m. in the Wright Conference Room for parents and guardians of 9th and 10th graders. This will be a "looking ahead" discussion with plenty of time for questions and answers.

Gap Year Fair

The Noble and Greenough School is sponsoring a Gap Year Fair on Sunday, February 12, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Over 50 vendors will be there representing programs ranging from travel, service, and internship opportunities.

We are grateful for all that they do, every day, to educate and care for our children. Thank you to all our parents for coming together to make this day possible. And a huge thank-you to Paulette Adams (P '19, P '22), for chairing this event!

Parents' Association Meeting Thank You

We would like to thank Courtney McGillicuddy, Kelly Neely, and Carl Rapisarda-Vallely for leading a vibrant and informative meeting on Global Education at Brimmer and May. They offered a panoramic "snapshot" of the many ways that global education threads through Brimmer's multidisciplinary curriculum, from LS global themes and presentations, MS Exhibitions, US Winterim trips, to the Global Studies Diploma. We would also like to thank our parents for attending on this snowy day. Minutes will be posted here next week.
