Snow days can be great! We have the opportunity to read a bit more than usual, and our students return looking healthy and rested. During the blizzard our faculty circulated some of their thoughts on two interesting articles. I shared the article " Why Curiosity Enhances Learning" by Marianne Stenger, which was published in Edutopia, December 17, 2014. Dr. Reese shared the recently published opinion piece in The Atlantic about the importance of joy in learning. Both of these articles resonate with our School's mission and philosophy. I think you may enjoy reading them.
Published today in the online education section (The Learning Network) of the New York Times, is The Gator's STEAM video and news segment, by Sam Girioni and Susanna Calhoun. Our student writers, videographers, and artists are finding this new platform for communication exciting and motivating. Congratulations to our student writers for creating a positive digital footprint!
Sincerely,
Judy Guild

News from Lower School
Dear Lower School Families,
Well that was historic--the weather certainly reminded us that it is January! The month concluded with the Pre-K/K Informance, which was a big hit! The beginning of February is right around the corner and starts with a bang for the faculty and staff: Next Friday, the P.A. will host the Faculty Appreciation Luncheon, an event that is looked forward to for weeks by those who work at Brimmer and May!
An important calendar reminder: The Skating party at Larz Anderson will be on Friday, February 20 not February 6.
Best wishes,
Thomas Fuller Courtney P. McGillicuddy

From the Middle School
Dear Parents/Guardians,
A reminder that if you have not yet met with your child's advisor, please contact him/her to set up a meeting for next week.
You should have received an email from the School indicating that grades and comments have been posted, with directions on how to access them. Please let me know if you either can not access them or have not yet received the email.
Friday, February 6, is a DRESS DAY in observance of Staff Appreciation day.

School Bee Champion
Monday, January 26, saw a tightly contested Round 2 of the 2015 National Geographic Bee. Of the 6 finalists who earned the right to compete for School Champion, only one could be crowned the winner. For the third consecutive year, Benjamin Jaffer '21 has won the honor of School Champion. Next, Benjamin will take the challenging State Bee Qualifying Test. The results will be graded by National Geographic, and only the students who earned among the top 100 scores will compete to represent Massachusetts at the National Round of the Bee in a few months.
Along with a special congratulations to Benjamin Jaffer for this impressive result, I would like to commend all participants in this year's School Round for their endeavors in the 2015 National Geographic Bee.

Winterim Trip Assembly Meetings
Assemblies during the month of February are dedicated to Winterim Trip meetings which help the students prepare for the practical and educational aspects of the trips.
Semester II Grading Timeframe Information
Due to the week of trips for Winterim, the first half of Semester II (Interim II) is the shortest grading period of the School year. Academic Warnings for students in grades 9 - 11 are determined on Friday, February 13 and issued early the following week. Because seniors are released for Senior Project at the end of April, Interim II grades are determined for them by Friday, February 27 and issued early the following week. Interim II grades for students in grades 9 - 11 are determined by March 6. Please note, however, that Interim grades are not official grades and represent a snapshot in time of the semester grade. After the spring vacation, there remain nine weeks of School plus final exams before the Semester II and Year grades are determined. Upper School students are encouraged to be studious throughout the semester, of course!
