This is our last weekly Bulletin for 2014. The week before the New Year, I watch the media's effort to present us with a visual review of the year gone by. Thankfully, my own year-in-review is filled with images of students learning, enjoying life, and expressing themselves in a variety of ways. When the world is filled with conflict and pain, I count it a privilege to be surrounded by optimism and lightheartedness on a daily basis.
I wish all of you a wonderful vacation with your children and a peaceful and happy New Year. I look forward to seeing you in 2015.
Sincerely,
Judy Guild
Head of School

Brimmer Plus
Jared Heller '19 has co-authored a book with his father entitled The 200 Most Important Things Kids Need To Know About Life (And a Parent Needs To Teach Them) published by Xlibris (2014). The book is a collection of practical wisdom and philosophy about many major subjects, including school, parent-child relationships, independence, morality, friendship, love, being your own person, and finding your identity. An interesting feature of the book is that some of the useful maxims are expressed through the metaphors of young people's sports and games. Jared's book appears on both Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com.

The upcoming break is a great time to make sure your child will be set to leave the country in March! Please make sure his/her passport is up to date and has at least 6 months remaining from the day the group will return to the United States. Christine Chapman has been in contact with everyone who will also need to obtain visas, and those students will need to return to School in January with the required documents so we can move forward with the visa process. Additionally, please visit travel.state.gov to see if your child will need any vaccinations and for updated travel guidelines about the country he or she will be visiting.

2014 Shakespeare Competition Winner
Congratulations to Ava Gruber '18 who was the winner of the 2014 Brimmer and May Shakespeare Competition. She will go on to represent the School at the English-Speaking Union's regional competition on January 24 at Mount Ida College Campus Center Theatre. Students prepared and delivered a 20-line section from a Shakespeare play and a sonnet to a panel of Brimmer and May teachers including Dean of Upper School Students Paul Murray; English teacher Don Reese; and Creative Arts Department Chair Bill Jacob, who then chose the winner. This is the seventh year the School has organized the competition.

Summer Opportunities
Despite the chilly weather, it is not too early to begin thinking about summer plans. Since early fall the College Counseling Office has been receiving brochures and posters on a daily basis from various academic and experiential programs from around the world. Look on the College News bulletin board after the holidays to see some of the programs displayed. Students and families are also invited to look through the box of information that will be kept in the College Office. This year, many organizations are sending information electronically. All of this information is being forwarded to all students in the Upper School and to the Middle School when appropriate. Please remind your student to check his or her Brimmer email on a regular basis.
PSAT's
The results of the PSAT exams will soon arrive from The College Board. The parents and guardians of all students who took the exam will receive a mailing containing an official score report, the actual test booklet the student used, and a detailed explanation from College Board about how to interpret the scores and the other helpful information provided on the score report. Please read through this material carefully as each score report is individualized to provide specific information on how your student can prepare for the SAT. Each student in grades 10 and 11 will be instructed to meet with a member of the college counseling team to go over their score report.
Summit SAT Class
Please be sure to register for the SAT preparation class that will begin in early January and continue weekly until spring, when the May and June SAT exams will be given. A mailing was sent home to all parents and guardians of students in the Class of 2016. Financial aid is available to those who qualify. Small group classes can also be arranged for ACT prep. A minimum of 4 students is needed and the class would take place in the home of one of the participants. Call Mrs. Pendergast in the College Office for more information about small group classes. There is no financial aid for these small group classes.

Director of College Counseling
