Thank you to all of our families for helping us accommodate everyone who wanted to attend last night's concert. The number of students in our music program made it difficult for the theatre's house management to be unstructured. As a School that values community gatherings as a top priority, the arts department and I struggled with how to guarantee a seat to members of our community who had a singer or player in the program. The spirit of cooperation made it all possible, and the evening was a great success. The concert was spectacular, and I wish to congratulate all the students for their hard work and commitment to excellence.
Our Upper School students are entering exam week on Monday. Studies continue to show how good rest and a healthy breakfast can help achieve mastery and produce better results on exams. The National Geographic documentary "Sleepless in America" is a well-researched production that explains the importance of sleep and is worthy of viewing. I encourage families to structure this weekend of study so sleep is a priority for our students. Mr. Iuliano designed the exam schedule and exam environment so students can have the best outcome possible. I wish our Upper School students much success next week.
Sincerely,
Judy Guild
Head of School

Middle School Reminders
Dear Parents/Guardians
As the holiday season is upon us, I wanted to urge all parents to encourage their Middle Schooler(s) to stay engaged during the break with some sort of activity that utilizes their mind and body. As Donna Wilson, author, teacher, educator, and psychologist states, "The first four years of life are all about developing the sensory-motor brain and learning the basics--how to walk, talk, and be social. But the Middle School and teen years are really about getting your sea legs up around problem solving and becoming a better thinker. In both cases kids start off kind of wobbly, but become much more sophisticated." It is critical therefore to continue to find ways for your children to remain active with their minds and bodies. Middle Schoolers are constantly in a state of flux with their growth and this includes their brain. Neuroplasticity is a term scientists use to describe how the brain responds and grows according to its environment and experience. It stands to reason then that with everything children do while they are active (reading, logic games, solving puzzles, role-playing, playing sports, yoga, dance, singing, acting, etc.) the brain is being used and in turn is being stretched and made bigger--also enhancing its plasticity for their lifetime. In addition, with the understanding that adolescents pre-frontal cortex (the area of the brain most important for organization and decision making) is not being fully developed in Middle School, it follows then that having them be active and "DOING" rather than sleeping the day away or sitting in front of the TV for long periods of time, will ensure that their brains will flourish.
Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday season and a very happy New Year!
Peter Gordon
Middle School Head
