Brimmer and May benefits in several ways from being a member of the National Association of Independent Schools. In NAIS President Chubb's recent blog post, he discusses the pressure independent schools are feeling as we strive to meet the demands of the colleges and respond to the changing landscape of higher education. At the end of the blog "Are Colleges the Culprit?" President Chubb remarks on how college admissions offices look for a variety of skills in a student. Skills such as teamwork, curiosity, creativity, and resilience are highlighted. He also referenced Harvard as a college that is looking for "excellent communicators, students who know how to work with others from a wide range of backgrounds, young people deeply committed to tackling problems . . . and individuals who think globally automatically." While they profess that test scores still matter, they are looking for more than that.
President Chubb affirms Brimmer and May's mission to educate a diverse student body to be globally minded, creative, collaborative, and critical thinkers and problem solvers. I have included the link to this blog in case you would enjoy reading this blog and following his work.
Sincerely,
Judy Guild

News from Lower School
Dear Lower School Families,
Well, now that we have had our first snow, with more on the horizon, it is time to think about students being prepared for outdoor recess! Please check the weather and make sure your children have hats, coats, and gloves/mittens--if we have snow they will need boots and snow pants, too. Of course, Ms. McGillicuddy and I know that all these items will be labeled!
Last Friday at Share the Lower School had a wonderful treat thanks to Lower School parent Shayne Gilbert, mother of Marlie Kass in grade 4. Tom Wethern from the locally-based company iRobot came to visit. He shared a wealth of information regarding the development of robots, but it was the two robots running around on the stage that truly captured the interest of the students!
Best wishes,
Thomas Fuller Courtney P. McGillicuddy

College Counseling News
SAT Classes at Brimmer and May
Once again we will be offering a SAT preparation class this winter that will prepare juniors (Class of 2016) to take their first set of SATs in the spring. The twelve sessions will include an initial diagnostic exam, three full practice exams, and class work. All classes will be held at Brimmer and May; most are scheduled for Sunday mornings although there are two on Thursday evenings. Information and registration materials will be mailed home to juniors. An email with attached information will also be sent to parents and guardians. Although this class is recommended for juniors, it is open to any student who may be interested. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.
Looking Ahead for the Class of 2016
Weekly College Counseling classes begin for juniors in January when second semester begins. Junior College Night is Thursday, January 29. Although we are still working with seniors, the College Counseling team welcomes juniors who would like to come in to introduce themselves and begin conversations about the college process on an informal basis.
A Breakfast for Parents of 9th and 10th Graders will take place on February 12 to give an overview of the college process at Brimmer and May. More information to follow.

Director of College Counseling
