As the first quarter of the school year comes to a close today, I was reviewing the number of academic and co-curricular activities our students engage in each week. Clearly, our students are working hard in all divisions of the School, and the data tells the story.
In the Upper School we have the largest enrollment in ten years in the Creative Arts Diploma Program with 15 students. Sixteen students have committed themselves to the Global Studies Diploma Program, and our new STEAM Diploma Program has 8 students actively pursuing this course of study. Each diploma program has rigorous entry requirements with a required area of concentration. Moreover, 9 students have been accepted into the prestigious Scholars Society, and ninety total enrollments comprise the 14 Advanced Placement offerings. This year's honors program consists of 44 students with a total of 50 enrollments, which prepares them for many of these high level opportunities.
Our students are working extremely hard academically while also being involved in athletics and the arts. Our Cross Country team just clenched the MBIL league title, winning by a rather large margin. Our six soccer teams pursued their best until the season's end with the varsity teams in the playoffs and the thirds boys' team having an undefeated season. The girls' field hockey team had a building year as they developed stick skills and strengthened team play after having graduated many seniors last year.
In the arts, we have 41 Middle Schoolers in the upcoming production of Peter Pan, 45 Upper Schoolers in Great Expectations, 93 students in our After-School Music Program, 39 students in 2/3 Chorus, 56 students in 4/5 Chorus, 72 students in May Chorale, 54 students in Greenline, 18 students in Beginners Band, 46 students in Intermediate Band, and 47 students in M.S. or U.S. Ensembles.
The first quarter of the year has proven to be a busy time for our students, so please praise them for their hard work and encourage them to keep pursuing their personal best.
Sincerely,
Judy Guild
Head of School

From the Kitchen
Last Friday's kale chip sampling was a huge success--you have likely heard by now how much the students loved them, especially the Lower School students. One student even asked if we could have them EVERY Friday! Since we can't keep up with the demand, here is the recipe, to make at home. It is very simple.
Take one bunch of kale, and wash and dry very thoroughly. Rub leaves with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and bake for 15-20 minutes in a 300 degree oven. These are best the day you bake them--they will lose their crispness if stored. Enjoy!

News from Lower School
Dear Lower School Families,
Harvest Fest was a blast, and the weather was very fall-like! It is always fun for me to watch the Middle and Upper School students interacting with the Lower School students. Special thanks to Ms. Hellmuth, Ms. McGillicuddy, Mrs. Clamage, and the Harvest Fest Committee!
The Lower School is continuing its tradition of collecting money for UNICEF. The fifth grade did a presentation at last week's Share explaining how UNICEF benefits the children of the world. Many of our children will make the rounds for Halloween tonight and will gather a lot of candy, too. Well, if you find your household has gathered too much of the sweet stuff, we have a wonderful idea for you. . . Ms. McGillicuddy will be collecting surplus candy (no more than a handful, please) in her office on Monday and Tuesday, November 3 and 4. She will be sending it to Operation Gratitude, which sends candy to our troops serving overseas!
Grade One Parents: I will be hosting a light breakfast meeting in the Lower School library on Friday, November 14 at 8:15 a.m. Ms. McGillicuddy and Ms. Sammeta will speak bout the Literacy Program and answer questions.
Please do not forget to turn your clocks back this weekend and change the batteries in your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors-enjoy the extra hour of sleep, too.
Best wishes,
Thomas Fuller Courtney P. McGillicuddy

Global Connections Update
The Middle School is spending the fall immersing themselves in the Latin America as part of their Arts and Humanities Global Program. In 7th grade drama and music, students are exploring the world of Latin dance. We are thrilled to welcome a guest artist, Jeanette Pizarro, who will be working with the 7th graders throughout the semester, teaching them how to dance salsa and merengue. She is an expert Latin dance instructor. Later in the year, the dance company Rumba y Timbal will work with the entire Middle School and perform during our assembly period. Look out for more updates about this exciting unit in future Bulletins!
